Games provide important skills for young children plus they are fun too. They also help teach children necessary life skills, such as cooperation, critical thinking and motor control. It’s amazing what you can make when you have the right materials. I love making easy DIY games with Lil P. We have made a simple ice cream catching game, snakes and ladders and much more. Not only are DIY games low cost, but they also give children a sense of achievement. Here is an easy project for you to try at home.

  1. First, we’ll make the fishes. Take a pipe cleaner in any bright colour, Fold it in half, twist the end to form the tail fin, then roll the other side around your thumb to form a circular hole.
  2. Make as many fishes as you want in different colours.
  3. Push a pom-pom inside the circle & stick a large Googly eye to make the fish Eye.
  4. To secure the pom-pom, you can add additional glue. Craft glue or a Glue gun works best.

Assemble the Pipe Cleaner Fishing Game

  1. Make a fishing rod using a satin ribbon that is stuck onto a craft stick at one end and has a small circular magnet at the other end.
  2. Make one each for every player that you want to have.
For the final step, create a fun setup in a blue tub or on a bedspread.
Place some sand, some decorative stones, some seashells ..
we added in some colourful sequins to jazz it up.

  1. The magnet will help you ‘catch’ some pipe cleaner fishes. Whoever catches the maximum fishes in a minute wins. The metal material in the pipe cleaners will be attracted to the magnet – making it easy to pull up the fish.

Because it is summertime at the moment, we made ours into fish! But, this activity doesn’t have to work only in the summer. It can work with a fish book you borrowed from the library if you took a trip to the keys or just because you bought your first aquarium.

It’s a wonderful activity that can be applied all year round.

This Pipe Cleaner Fish Game is easy to put together {10 minutes tops} and is a simple “busy bag” idea for toddlers. Slip it in a plastic baggie and carry it in your purse for those moments you need to entertain the wee ones.

You can even add some educational lessons like “catch the bluefish” or “catch the matching fish.”

  1. Perfect, thank you 🙂 We just made two of each creature. We had to use PVA glue instead of a glue gun so we’re just waiting impatiently for the glue to dry! I had to go through several magnets to find ones that were strong enough to easily pick up the octopus.
