Rainbow Paper Collage Art for Kids

Sharing is caring!

As the dull and dreary winter months come to an end, It’s amazing to see colors everywhere.

So I shift our focus to colorful toddler crafts here in my home craft sessions.  As you can imagine, rainbow projects are perfect for this!  I love crafts that use papers in vibrant colors & creating whimsical designs of them!

Materials needed for this project:

  • Construction papers in all the colors of the rainbow + a white, blue & green Letter or A4 sized extra sheet
  • Scissors
  • Glue stick
  • White Gel Pen
  • Paper hole punch
  • Pencil

To make the craft:

Start by cutting out 1 inch long strips of the colored paper. We used a simple 120 GSM construction paper in really bright shades – Violet, Indigo, Blue, Green, Yellow, Orange & Red. Let the older kids practice their paper cutting skills, and give the younger kids the strips already cut to size so that they are not overwhelmed.

Now glue all the strips onto a white sheet of paper in sequence. Cut out any excess white parts. Voila! your rainbow colored paper is ready. You could alternately also use a masking tape to paint layers of rainbow color onto a white cardstock.

Turn the paper over and draw your whimsical designs using a pencil and cut them out. We drew a house, a tree, colorful clouds, hot air balloons, shamrocks. This is very open-ended, draw a desert scene or even rainbow skyscrapers!

Paste your design on a fresh Letter / A4 sized paper. We used a blue paper for the sky & a green cutout for the grass. Using a hole punch, we even cut out tiny circles. Miss P called them the rainbow flowers for the garden.

Decorate each piece with a white gel pen. This part is entirely optional. My daughter is 10 and loves to doodle Indian motifs, lines & dots so we did that. We also added tiny baskets for out hot air balloons using a brown chalk marker.
