Stick and Leaf Butterfly Nature Craft
Spring is a great time for nature walks and collecting objects such as rocks, flowers, leaves, branches and seeds- all ripe for the picking by curious hands. We love kids’ crafts, especially ones that bring the outdoors inside with easy natural crafts projects featuring supplies found in nature.
This ultra sweet Stick and Leaf Butterfly can be easily made with fresh leaves, twigs and flower petals and would make a great spring craft to create after a nature walk.
Stick and Leaf Butterfly Nature Craft
Supplies:
- Twigs & sticks
- Leaves
- Flowers
- Scissors
- Glue gun
- Black Marker
- Chalk markers in bright colors
To make the Stick and Leaf Butterfly Nature Craft:
Gather items on your nature walk – We have a rule to not pick any item that’s still growing . Anything that’s fallen on the ground is OK to be picked up. No plucking leaves & flowers. Once home, find a place where you can spread out your treasures to decide what sort of butterflies you’d like to make. We decided to use simple sticks and some not too dry leaves. Leave the leaves and flowers pressed overnight in a thick bound book. Using liquid chalk markers, make colorful patterns on the leaves. You could draw lines, sqiggles or dots. We used Pink, Yellow & Purple to make our patterns. Two big leaves & 2 small leaves. Using the scissors, cut the twig to size. we had 2-inch leaves, so we kept the stick about 3 to 4 inches long. We made a tiny incision to the top of the stick and opened it up to reveal a Y shape. This will form the butterfly’s tentacles. We used a black marker to highlight the Y shape. Using a glue gun, stick the two larger leaves to the twig as shown. Let dry. Then stick on two smaller leaves and your Stick and Leaf Butterfly is ready!
