Kidmade Upcycled Tin Jewellery Boxes

Sharing is caring!

There’s nothing more spectacular than a sparkling box to hold your special items. For the KidsCraftStars challenge this month, we had to craft with a Tin can or box. Miss P and I decided to make some Upcycled Tin Jewellery Boxes. You could use these boxes to store any small knick-knacks and collections or even for gifting, but we happen to have an enormous stash of plastic kids’ jewellery so we’ll call ours ‘jewellery boxes’.

How to Make Upcycled Tin Jewellery Boxes

It started off totally different. We tried to craft with an empty soda can – Had to bribe my husband to drink a can of beer ( He hates it from a can and nobody drinks canned soups or juices because miss p is allergic to preservatives!) and then once emptied and cleaned, we tried to cut off the top with a cutter ( we tried with a swiss knife and even a hammer) But as expected, it got bent n pressed in weird places. So we decided to use some mini Cookie Boxes that my husband frequently buys during his flights instead.

We wanted to use Gold & Pink acrylic sprays but the gold was too runny and wouldn’t coat ( don’t ask!!) so we ended up making one Blue & one Pink. Both tins were sprayed with Acrylic sprays generously. We applied 3 coats with 15-minute intervals and left them overnight to dry. Advice – DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS INDOORS. The acrylic sprays are highly inflammable and the mist flies everywhere. Miss has allergies so she was not involved in this part. If your kid is old enough to do this, make sure they wear gloves & a mask.

We used Blue & Pink, but you could use any colour. Use acrylic paint in a modern palette to decorate your jewellery box with a unique design. Add rhinestones for glittery accents. We had some pretty rhinestone & pearl stickers in blue and some Indian accent buttis. Miss P designed the boxes herself.

Use a low-intensity glue gun to stick the embellishments on.

For the Pink Box, we used pink colored rhinestone stickers, so it was really easy for Miss P to decorate them entirely on her own.

You can see that for a lighter shade even 3 coats were not enough. But we were really impatient and didn’t want to wait another night for the fresh coat to dry. Besides, the sequins covered the text anyway. We added the lower layer first.

Followed by an inverted layer just below the lid. Miss P had earlier stuck this layer at the edge of the box. When I pointed it out, she realised her mistake – the box would never close, then moved it lower, just below the lid’s edge.

More stickers in the middle and a pearl design for the lid. She sat patiently for half an hour decorating and redecorating her two boxes.

Lots of embellishments later, I didn’t want to stop her, our gorgeous jewellery boxes were ready.

Decorate the tin boxes to express your own unique style just like the jewellery you put in it.  By itself, the box also makes a thoughtful birthday, Mother’s Day or holiday gift. Fill it with sweet treats or a small trinket for a handmade gift they won’t soon forget. We will be making more of these for Diwali!

    1. They are available at all leading craft shops & stationary shops. I bought mine from Itsy Bitsy & Big market. They are available on Amazon.in & amazon.com too.
Normal acrylic paints will peel off over time. Sprays give better adhesion. An alternate is to use exterior oil paints used to paint metal grills. They are available in all hardware stores as mini 50 gm samples. They however take over 5 – 7 days to dry.
