Isn’t it interesting that how your New Year’s Eve turns out will depend upon your geography? Yes, depending upon where you are in the world, you’ll be doing something different on New Year’s Eve!

If you’re in Europe, there’s a good possibility that you’ll attend a New Year’s Eve party with a masquerade theme. You know, those parties where beautifully dressed people dance with their faces hidden by exquisite masks!

How did the New Year masquerade tradition originate?

The tradition is believed to have originated in the 13th century, when upper-class Venetians held parties from December 26th all the way through the New Year. As time passed, the tradition reached all classes of society – and all parts of the world!

So this year, if you’re planning a fun New Year’s Eve party of your own, we have something you can use – a gorgeous printable New Year mask craft! The Venetians made masks out of leather and other materials, but all you need is paper!

If you’re hosting a New Year’s Eve party of your own, you can even set up a mask-decorating station so that your guests can decorate their own masks. It’s the perfect thing to add some mystery to your party outfit!

Gorgeous Printable New Year Mask Craft

Supplies required:

Colored craft papers
Popsicle stick
Glitter paper or foam sheets
Decorative stickers
Gold marker
Pencil
Craft glue
A pair of scissors

How to make the Printable New Year Mask:

1. Download and print the Printable New Year Mask template. The template includes parts of the New Year mask, like the eye base, a scalloped edge and the year cutout.

2. Trace the parts of the template on craft paper of different colors and cut them out. You can use any colors of your choice – go nuts! We’ve chosen purple and pink for the mask parts, and a bright turquoise for the year cutout.

3. Stick the decorative border along the top edge of the eye cutout. Use a gold marker to outline the numbers on the year cutout, as shown below.

4. Now stick the year cutout on the decorative edge on top of the eye cutout.

5. The base of your printable New Year mask craft is ready and it’s time to decorate! Stick a few shiny stickers along the border of the eye cutout.

6. Once that’s done, get your glitter paper or foam and cut out tiny triangles. They should be really small!

7. Fill in any empty spaces on the mask with the tiny glitter triangles.

8. Nearly done! All that’s left to do is to attach the paper mask pattern to the top of a Popsicle stick.

Your gorgeous printable New Year mask craft is ready to use!

These are a great addition to our list of festive masks, including our Day of the Dead mask and Mardi Gras mask. If you look closely, you’ll notice that we’ve made a few changes in the shapes of the eye cutouts and the decorative borders – one is a little pointy, while the other is more rounded. Feel free to make your own adjustments and decorate it to your liking. After all, it IS your printable New Year mask craft, and you can do what you like with it!
