Whimsical Wooden Spoon Grinch Craft for Kids
Celebrate the story of the Grinch this holiday season, with a cute wooden spoon Grinch craft! But our Grinch isn’t grumpy, he’s quite pleasant!
We’ve noticed how Christmas is getting more commercialised every year, but did you also notice that the holiday season seems to begin earlier every year?
There’s actually a name for it – Christmas Creep! And no, it doesn’t refer to a shady-looking character peering out from behind a wall; it’s a word that indicates how retailers and corporations have started pushing the holiday season up, so you start seeing Christmas-themed products, decorations and advertisements earlier – sometimes even before Halloween ends!
This seems to be the perfect time to remind ourselves what Christmas is all about, and who better to do it than our very own Grinch?
This year, let’s re-read the classic How the Grinch Stole Christmas and when you’re done, take out your craft supplies – we’re going to make a cute little wooden spoon Grinch craft!
Wooden Spoon Grinch Craft for Kids

Supplies required:
- Wooden spoon
- Felt in different colours
- Acrylic paints
- Markers or Sharpies
- Pencil
- Hot glue or fabric glue
- A pair of scissors
How to make the Wooden Spoon Grinch Craft:
1. Let’s start with the base of our craft – a wooden spoon! Choose a clean, dry spoon that doesn’t have any cracks or uneven patches on it.

2. Use green acrylic paint to paint the spoon. If your spoon is dark, you may need an extra coat or two. Let the paint dry completely.

3. While the paint is drying, download and print the Wooden Spoon Grinch Craft template. This template contains the parts of our Grinch craft, including the hat, pompom, trim, collar, coat, hem and shoes.

4. Trace the parts of the template on felt fabric of the appropriate colors and cut them out. We’re dressing our Grinch in a Santa outfit, so we’ll stick to red and white. Pick red for the coat, hat and shoes and white felt for all the trims and pompoms. Lay out all your cutouts as shown.

5. Glue the shoe borders along the top edge of the shoe cutouts.

6. Stick the hat trim to the base of the hat cutout so that it covers the flat edge.

7. Attach the round cutout, the pompom, to the tip of the hat cutout. Your wooden spoon Grinch craft’s hat is done.

8. Moving on to the Grinch’s outfit – stick the collar and hem to the top and bottom of the red coat base.

9. Time to bring back your painted spoon – we’re going to dress our wooden spoon Grinch craft! Start by applying some glue to the tip of the spoon’s bowl and sticking the hat here.

10. Next, use glue to stick the coat on the spoon’s handle, right below the bowl. Your craft should look like this:

11. Attach the shoe cutouts to the bottom end of the spoon’s handle, and your wooden spoon Grinch craft is now fully dressed!

12. Take out your black Sharpie to draw a face for our Grinch. You can make him look like he does in the book, but we’ve gone with a more pleasant expression.

There you go – your wooden spoon Grinch craft is finally ready!

We absolutely love how this Wooden Spoon Grinch Craft has turned out! The Grinch looks so warm and cosy in that outfit, and he also looks quite pleased with himself! Looks like he’s finally figured out that Christmas doesn’t come from a store! This is a fun project for kids to experiment with different materials, while also learning that they can use pretty much anything – even an old wooden spoon – to create fun, festive crafts!
