10 Veterans Day Crafts for Kids
Honor military veterans and learn about the importance of Veterans Day on 11th November with these Veterans Day Crafts for Kids.
One of the things I love most about crafting is the part where I get to learn about various cultures and observances around the year. Some major celebrations like the Chinese New Year are well known, but when we dig a little deeper, we find so many more occasions to celebrate.
That’s how I found out about Veterans Day..
What is Veterans Day and why do we celebrate it?
Veterans Day is observed in the United States exclusively to celebrate military personnel who’ve served for their country. It is such a lovely thing, to have a day to remember all the brave people who protect us and our loved ones.
Veterans Day versus Remembrance Day
Veterans Day commemorates veterans of all wars. Great Britain, France, Australia, and Canada also commemorate the veterans of World War I and World War II on or near November 11th: Canada has Remembrance Day, while Britain has Remembrance Sunday (the second Sunday of November).
When is Veterans Day 2020?
Veterans Day is November 11, 2020.
What can you do to celebrate Veterans Day?
Since Veterans Day is just around the corner, it’s only fair that we get ready to celebrate it and learn more about it. While there are usually parades and other programs, this year, the celebrations may be restricted on account of the pandemic. If you’re going to miss all the outdoor fun this year, don’t worry – we’ve got loads of indoor fun lined up with some fun Veterans Day crafts for kids!
10 Veterans Day Crafts for Kids
1. Remembrance Wreath
The story of how poppies became associated with veterans is an interesting one. It was based on a poem by a WWI soldier, which then inspired another poem by a University Professor. The Professor then decided to sell silk poppies to raise money for veterans. Celebrate this lovely story with a poppy wreath from No Time for Flash Cards.
2. Patriotic Photo Frame
If you know someone who’s a veteran, this would make the perfect gift! Free Kids Crafts shows us how to use simple supplies like craft sticks and pipe cleaners to create an elegant but memorable keepsake.
3. Red Felt Poppy Craft
WWI destroyed a lot of the plants and trees on the battlefield. Among the ruins, these bright red poppies grew, since they’re actually weeds and can grow anywhere. Soon they came to symbolize hope after despair. That’s a nice thought to ponder upon as you make these easy poppies out of red felt.
4. Stained Glass Soldier Silhouette
Clever Patch has an impressive craft that’s perfect for Veterans Day – a soldier silhouette. You can use any colored paper of your choice – a good tip would be to go with the colors of your national flag. A simple craft with a lot of artistic appeals.
5. Military Branch Puzzle Activity
Fantastic Fun and Learning has a fun project to teach kids about the different branches of the military. They’ll be interested to know that we have to be protected from all sides, and how there are people specialized to work in each area.
6. Pinwheel Poppies Craft
Mum in the Madhouse has a beautiful craft that combines the fun of pinwheels with the symbolism of red poppies. Make a bunch of these and pop them into a vase for a one-of-a-kind decor piece that’s perfect for the occasion.
7. Popsicle Stick Soldier Puppet
Glued to My Crafts has a project that kids will enjoy making – soldier puppets! Once the kids are familiar with the different branches of the military, they can make puppets specific to each branch, with their unique uniforms.
8. Veterans Day Soldier Boy/Girl Craft
Miss Kindergarten has a cute soldier boy/girl craft where kids can write down what being a hero means to them. Putting together the craft is fairly simple, but the writing part may need them to put on their thinking caps.
9. Torn Paper Poppy Craft
There are many ways to make a poppy craft, but this one is one of my favorites! Housing a Forest makes use of torn paper to create collage-style poppy that looks lovely. This is a great pick for younger kids who’ll love tearing and sticking.
10. Military Matching Game for Kids
Indoor fun is incomplete without a memory matching game! We like this one at From ABCs to ACTs, which uses military and patriotic icons for a fun memory game. Great for the whole family to participate!
Veterans Day isn’t like other celebrations, it’s a much more solemn one. But it’s a great opportunity to learn about America, whether you live there or not. If you’d like to learn about other countries too, don’t forget to check out our Australian crafts, India crafts, Canada crafts, China Crafts, and Africa crafts. So much to learn about!
