We’re used to celebrating Mother’s Day and Father’s Day with a lot of enthusiasm, but it doesn’t seem to be the case for Grandparents, although they’re probably more popular with little kids! In fact, did you know that Grandparents Day was established by a kid?

In 1969, 9-year-old Russell Capper wrote to the United States president, Richard Nixon, asking for a special day to celebrate grandparents. Eventually, other people also encouraged the formation of such a day, and it finally came into being!

When is Grandparents Day?

In the United States, the first Sunday after Labor Day is celebrated as Grandparents Day. Here are the dates for other countries:

Brazil, Portugal, Spain – 26th July
Taiwan – the fourth Sunday in August
Mexico – 28th August
Bangladesh – 9th September
Canada, Estonia, Philippines – the second Sunday in September
Japan – the third Monday of September
Italy – 2 October
UK – the first Sunday in October
Hong Kong, Malta – the second Sunday in October
Australia – the last Sunday in October
Russia – 28th October
Singapore – the fourth Sunday in November
