You get selected for another mission, but this time, you get an ear infection that grounds you. Finally, you make it on the Apollo 14 mission, becoming the first American to travel into space. Finally!

This is the amazing story of NASA astronaut Alan Shepard, who was part of the first American human spaceflight on 5th May 1961. It’s an amazing occasion that deserves to be commemorated, which is why 5th May is now known as National Astronaut Day!
