World Space Week is a week-long, international celebration of space technology and its contributions to the improvement of society. It was started in 1999 by the United Nations General Assembly and has since been celebrated every year from 4-10 October. Here are a few facts about World Space Week:
- World Space Week begins on October 4, to commemorate the launch of the first human-made satellite, Sputnik 1, in 1957
- It ends on October 10, which is the anniversary of the signing of the Treaty on Principles Governing the Activities of States in the Exploration and Peaceful Uses of Outer Space, in 1967
- The United Nations and the World Space Week Association (WSWA) coordinate the events of World Space Week
- The theme for 2024 is ‘Space & Climate Change‘, which focuses on the role of space technology in fighting the effects of climate change
