10 Ideas to Celebrate Vaisakhi with Kids – Understand the significance of this festival by making some fun crafts!

Festivals are not just a great time to celebrate and enjoy, but also an opportunity to acquaint our children with India’s diverse culture. Last weekend we took our kids to an Easter Egg hunt at a friend’s place. Even though my husband and I are both Hindus, we love all cultural and religious holidays too;  St. Patrick’s Day, Christmas, Diwali, Ramazan, and even Chinese New Year. Then I realized I had no crafts for Vaisakhi that’s an important day for Sikhs.

What is Vaisakhi?

Also spelled Vaisakhi, Baisakhi is the Sikh New Year celebration. A joyous, vibrant event, it’s also the spring harvest festival, where Sikhs rejoice in the abundance of crops and pray for future good fortune.

When is Vaisakhi 2024?

For the year 2024, Baisakhi will be celebrated on Saturday, 13 April. The auspicious moment of the festival will start at 9:15 PM preceding Mesha Sankranti.

Why is Vaisakhi important?

For the Sikhs, it is a festival to commemorate the establishment of the Khalsa. It marks the start of the Punjabi New Year, but it is also a day to celebrate 1699 – the year when Sikhism was born as a collective faith.

History of Vaisakhi

In 1699, Guru Gobind Singh used the excuse of Vaisakhi to gather together tens of thousands of Sikhs. This is what happened!

How is Vaisakhi celebrated?

The biggest celebrations occur in Punjab, India (the birthplace of Sikhism) and include feasts, parades, prayers, and plenty of socializing. To celebrate Vaisakhi, Sikhs will visit places of worship called Gurdwaras. These will also be specially decorated for the occasion.

‘Nagar’ means town and ‘kirtan’ means the singing of hymns from the Guru Granth Sahib, which is the Sikh holy book. The book is carried in the processions in a place of honor. Celebrations traditionally include singing and music, as well as reading scriptures out loud and chanting hymns. Many Sikhs also choose Vaisakhi as the day to be baptized into the Khalsa brotherhood.
