Have you watched The Lion King yet? It was one of my favorite movies growing up, and it makes me so glad to be able to catch it again with my own child!

When I watched the 1994 version, I was a huge fan of Simba – the kid version. I wasn’t too keen to have him grow up into a great big lion with a mane and everything. I guess that’s how I feel about my own cub now!!

The lion is the King of the Jungle, and there are a few reasons why. Here are a few fun facts about these amazing animals.

There are two main lion subspecies – the African lion and the Asiatic lion
Not all male lions have manes – some African lions are maneless, to adapt to the local climate
Cubs grow up together as part of a pride, and suckle from any lioness in the group
Lions eat a lot in a single meal – up to a quarter of their own weight, nearly 40 kg
Besides meat, lions also consume plants for hydration
