During the pandemic, people the world over were celebrating the contributions of healthcare workers, and they were called heroes. What is Doctor’s Day?
Doctor’s Day in India is celebrated on the 1st of July, which is both the birth anniversary and death anniversary of Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy. Dr. Roy was an exemplary physician, educator, social worker and statesman.
Dr. Roy was the personal doctor of Indian stalwarts like Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru, which put him in close proximity with India’s freedom struggle.
He was the first President of the All India Medical Council and soon became the Chief Minister of the state of West Bengal. He introduced several schemes to fight tuberculosis, polio and malaria, India’s main evils at the time. His contributions earned him India’s highest civilian honor, the Bharat Ratna, in 1961.
Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy is considered the ‘Architect of modern West Bengal’, and that’s why in his honor, his birthday is observed as Doctor’s Day across India. It’s an opportunity to remember the selfless work of doctors, work for their benefits and in our case, make some cool doctor crafts for kids!
