The Statue of Liberty is instantly identifiable to people all over the world, and for a number of reasons. The crown with seven spikes is one of them, and the torch that is held high is another one. But the biggest reason is probably that she’s a gorgeous green color!
Why is the Statue of Liberty green?
You’d think that the statue was made with some special kind of green stone or marble, but that’s not the case. The Statue of Liberty was made with copper, about 200,000 pounds!
When it was assembled in the 1880s, it was a nice copper-brown color. It stayed this way for many years, but over time, the copper began to oxidise and turn green. That’s how Lady Liberty got her gorgeous minty green shade!
Now that we know all this about the Statue of Liberty, why not build a cute paper cup Statue of Liberty craft to celebrate the upcoming 4th of July celebrations? We’re ready, so let’s get started!

Supplies required:
- Paper cup
- Colored craft papers
- Pencil
- Template
- A pair of scissors
- Craft glue
- Markers
How to make the Paper Cup Statue of Liberty Craft:
1. Download and print the Paper Cup Statue of Liberty Craft Template. The template contains parts of the Statue of Liberty craft, including the body, head, arms, robe, crown and flame.

2. Trace the parts of the template on craft paper of the appropriate colors, which in this case is light green! Choose a light green for the head, body and arms, and a different shade for the robe, tablet, torch and crown pieces. Use yellow and orange for the inner and outer flames.

3. We begin with the part of the paper cup Statue of Liberty craft that gives it its grandeur – the crown! Stick the triangular spikes on the band of the crown.

4. Once you’ve finished sticking the spikes on the crown, turn it over. Apply glue to the top edge of the statue’s head and stick the crown on this. Keep the head aside.

5. Take the torch and flame cutouts. Stick the inner flame inside the outer flame.

6. Attach the completed flame to the torch.

7. The torch needs to be held by our paper cup Statue of Liberty craft, so let’s stick it to one of the arm cutouts. Stick the tablet to the other arm cutout.

8. Fold the rounded edge of the arm holding the tablet inward and stick it to the tablet.

9. Time to take out our markers and add details to our paper cup Statue of Liberty craft! Use a dark green marker to draw outlines inside the crown, torch, and tablet. Use the same marker to draw features on the statue’s face. Use a light green marker to draw a hairline and outlines for the arms. Don’t forget a pink marker for the cheeks!

10. Time to get our base ready – stick the robe in the middle of the body cutout.

11. Wrap the cup cover base around the cup and glue the open sides. The cup’s open mouth is the base of our paper cup Statue of Liberty craft, and the cup’s bottom is the top of the craft.

12. Attach the head to the top of the statue’s body with glue.

13. Nearly there! Make thin folds along the straight edges of both arms. Apply glue to the folded edges.

14. Attach both arms to either side of the statue’s sides, so that the flame is facing up.

That’s it, your paper cup Statue of Liberty craft is ready!

Doesn’t our paper cup Statue of Liberty craft look majestic, standing with that torch raised high? This is an excellent choice for any lesson about American monuments or for any American celebration like the 4th of July. The fact that it can stand on its own is a bonus, and makes taking it to class easier!
