When you think about the national symbol of a country, you think of something majestic, like Argentina‘s sun or America‘s eagle. The last thing you would think of is a peeing boy, but that’s exactly what Belgium’s national symbol is!

The peeing boy, or Manneken Pis, is a 17th-century bronze statue in Brussels, of a small boy amid urinating. It sounds strange and has many legends behind it. One story is that when on the verge of defeat in war, Belgium’s enemies put gunpowder near a large powder barrel, hoping to set the city on fire. This was spotted by a little boy who urinated on the gunpowder, deactivating it, thus saving the city. Thus, the statue was built in his honor!

The fact that the Belgians celebrate this statue shows that they have a great sense of humor. Here are some more fun facts about the country.
