Cheerful DIY Clay Rudolph Craft for Kids
Celebrate the red-nosed hero of the holiday season with a cute DIY Clay Rudolph Craft for Kids! Check out the step-by-step tutorial to get started!
Do you know anyone who was made fun of because they had big ears, or a huge nose, or crooked teeth? Well, if you do, please tell them the story of Rudolph the reindeer – he was made fun of because of his large red nose, but that was what ended up guiding Santa and the others on Christmas Eve!
Today, we celebrate individuality and uniqueness – just like Rudolph and his nose – with a cute DIY clay Rudolph craft for kids! As they make this craft, they’ll realize that something that is made with a lot of love is worthy – regardless of any ‘imperfections’!
Cheerful DIY Clay Rudolph Craft for Kids
Supplies required:
- Air-dry clay or foam clay in light brown, dark brown, beige, red and pink
- Clay crafting tools
- Clay rolling board/ acrylic board
- Clay rolling pin
How to make the Clay Rudolph Craft:
1. Of the two shades of brown, we’ll use the lighter one for Rudolph’s body. Pinch out a big piece of brown clay and roll it into a smooth ball.
2. Roll the ball on a flat surface to make a thick cylinder. Press one end of the cylinder against a flat surface so it becomes a little wider than the opposite end. Poke a hole in the bottom of the wider end using the ball pin tool. This will now enable the reindeer base to stand on it’s own on the wide base.
3. Pinch out two pieces of brown clay – these will be Rudolph’s hindlegs. Roll them into smooth balls.
4. Extend one part of the ball to make it an oval shape. Repeat with the other ball. Both legs now have a narrow end and a wide end.
5. Stick the narrow ends of the hindlegs on either side of the body, as shown below.
6. Take some more brown clay, and make two elongated tear-drop shapes. These will be Rudolph’s forelegs.
7. Flatten the wider part of the teardrop shapes using your fingers.
8. Attach the narrow parts of the forelegs on the front of Rudolph’s body, on the left and right sides. The body of our clay Rudolph craft is ready!
9. We are moving on the reindeer’s head. Pinch out a piece of beige clay and a piece of brown clay. Roll both pieces into smooth balls. Roll the brown ball on a flat surface so it stretches out into a thick rope, as shown below.
10. Flatten the cylinder. Then gently pinch a tiny part in the middle and smoothen the edges. You should end up with a shape as shown below.
11. Place the flattened cylindrical shape on the reindeer’s head so that the pointy end is in the middle of the face.
12. Time to give our clay Rudolph craft some ears! Pinch out two pieces of brown clay and roll them into smooth balls.
13. Shape the balls into tear drop shapes and flatten them.
14. Pinch the wider part of the teardrop shapes so they look like the picture below.
15. Attach the ears on Rudolph’s head. Our clay Rudolph craft is beginning to take shape!
16. Now take the dark brown clay and pinch out two pieces from it. Shape them into triangles.
17. Gently make an indentation on one edge of the triangle using your thumb and index finger. Repeat with the other triangle. These are Rudolph’s antlers.
18. Attach the antlers on the reindeer’s head, right next to the ears.
19. Make a tiny ball using some red clay and fix it on the face – now Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer lives up to his name!
20. We’re nearing the end of our clay Rudolph craft! Attach the reindeer’s head on top of the body.
21. It’s cold, so let’s make Rudolph a scarf! Pinch out some red clay and shape it into a rope.
22. Flatten it by pressing it against a smooth, flat surface.
23. Place one end of the scarf on the front of Rudolph’s body, over his shoulder.
24. Loop the other end of the scarf around his neck and wrap it around the first end.
25. Pinch out a small piece of pink clay and shape them into thin discs. Attach them on Rudolph’s cheeks. You can add some white spots on his forehead if you like. Add some eyes and a mouth and you’re done!
How adorable is this little clay Rudolph craft? It is honestly too cute for words, and I can imagine it would make a lovely little gift for a special person. You can also turn it into a photo holder by inserting a little wire holder, like we did in our clay sheep photo holder project. You could also turn it into an ornament or place it in a cute diorama along with Santa and the other reindeer!
