Sharing is caring!

Take pretend play food to the next level with a fun Paper Pie Craft for kids! Make cherry, pumpkin and blueberry pies out of simple paper collages!

It’s 14 March today, which you can also write in MM/DD form as as 3.14. Now, does that number look familiar? Oh yes, it’s ∏ (pi)!!

Yes, it’s Pi Day on 14th March, and yes, it’s because of the date! That’s a fascinating fact, but what interests me more are the pies of the edible variety. There are so many delicious pies out there, but my #1 favorite has to be cherry! My daughter’s dolls have been in desperate need of some play food, and since we love making DIY doll accessories, Miss P and I decided to make her dolls a pretend pie. And what better day than Pi day to make not one, but three!!

My daughter’s school always has adorable project stations for the children. Last week there was a “pumpkin pie” station that integrated sensory with art. We’ve done pie crafts before, but I decided we just had to try this one at home. Such a simple and fun activity!

3. Cut six strips of brown paper – three that are 5 inches long and three that are 5 and a half inches long. Each should be a quarter inch wide.

4. Place the three strips that are 5 inches facing up. We’re going to make a lattice pie crust. So first take a long paper strip and place it over the first strip. Lift the second strip and place the long strip under. Then finally over the third strip. Follow the process as if you were weaving the strips.

5. Cut out a circle of diameter 3.5-inches from the red glazed paper.

6. Get out your poly-fill or cotton balls or red pom poms and put some on top of the pie circle.  Put the red glazed paper over the pom-poms and glue along the edges.

7. Now add the lattice carefully over the pie crust and filling.. use glue and stick along the edges. Cut off the excess.

  3. White cotton wool/ pom poms
  4. Dried seeds

3. Glue the edge onto the crust, and cut away the portion where the slice should have been. Stick this part onto the edge of the cut slice.

4. For the whipped cream, glue some cotton wool onto the center, taking care to leave out the cut part. Similarly, glue some cotton on the slice as well.
