If you ask most people about the one drink that would perk them up, you’re likely to hear coffee as the answer. Not me – I’d choose a cup of silky smooth hot chocolate any day!

There’s something incredibly comforting about sipping on a cup of hot chocolate, isn’t there? So imagine my joy and excitement when I found out that there is actually a day dedicated to celebrating this amazing beverage. Yes, 31st January is National Hot Chocolate Day!

Most people think of hot chocolate as a European concoction, but the truth is that hot chocolate was a part of the culture of ancient Mayans and Aztecs. In fact, the word ‘chocolate’ is derived from the Aztec word ‘xocoatl‘. They crushed cocoa seeds and mixed them in water – some even added chili peppers!

Hot chocolate has changed a lot since then, and if you’re looking for the perfect modern recipe, we’ve got it!

The Perfect Hot Chocolate Recipe:

  1. Heat 500 ml of whole milk in a pan
  2. When the milk is warm, add 100 g of chopped chocolate (go for good quality dark chocolate)
  3. Stir till the chocolate has completely melted into the milk
  4. Add a sweetener of your choice, along with a pinch of salt
  5. If you like, go ahead and add an extra flavor like vanilla or cinnamon

Yes, enjoying a delicious cup of hot chocolate is one way to celebrate National Hot Chocolate Day; another way is to make some fun hot chocolate crafts, like these!
