“I tried to teach myself to draw anime, but I was so bad.” ~ Takashi Murakami

We love bright, happy colors, don’t we? They add cheer to a gloomy space and remind us of happy times. So it’s natural to think that this painting of colorful, smiley flowers here has been made with the same intention.

Yes, that’s a picture stuffed with happy flowers! But the longer you keep looking at it, the picture starts unnerving you a little, and those broad smiles start feeling a little eerie. In fact, they could be described as ‘maniacally cheerful’.

And you’re not wrong – that feeling was entirely the intention of the artist, Japanese painter Takashi Murakami!

Murakami grew up in a Japan that was still reeling under the events of World War II, and many of his paintings depict that contradiction of emotions, of trying to be happy in the midst of collective trauma.

As a result, Murakami’s work features all kinds of motifs, with smiley flowers co-existing with skulls. He uses lots of bright colors and borrows from Japanese traditional and popular culture. He is considered one of the world’s best contemporary pop art artists, and is even called the ‘Warhol of Japan‘.

Murakami is the father of the Superflat theory in painting, which focuses on the 2D nature of things, and also leans into Japan’s kawaii culture that celebrates all things cute.

Murakami’s work isn’t restricted to flat canvases; he has a whole range of merchandise, including fashion, decor, and more. Well, we’re also going to try making something that’s inspired by the artist – art! With Takashi Murakami’s birthday coming up on 1st February, it seems to be the right time to explore some Takashi Murakami art projects for kids!

Yet, he often combines them with dark elements like skulls to explore concepts of duality. Here, Nurture Store uses the repousse technique to hammer a design into aluminium foil.

Besides the smiley flowers and Mr. DOB, Takashi Murakami also developed ‘Kaikai and Kiki‘, two characters with contrasting personalities. Kaikai has bunny ears and is the gentler one, while Kiki has three eyes and is the mischievous one. This fits in with Murakami’s tendency to focus on duality in everything. 2 Soul Sisters Art Ed brings us an art project that encourages us to convert everyday items into our own Murakami-style characters!

You may think that Superflat theory is all about the ‘flat’ appearance of the paintings, with bold lines and no depth, but Murakami also meant it in another way. In postwar Japan, he wanted to blur the lines between ‘fine art’ and ‘commercial art’. Superflat theory was also meant to ‘flatten’ those lines and obliterate them, so everyone had access to all kinds of art. Let’s celebrate this spirit with a printable from Piqolo Kids, which helps us make our own Murakami-style flower arrangement.

Anime and manga are techniques of telling stories through pictures, and this is something ingrained in traditional Japanese art. Murakami’s love for storytelling can be seen in his huge 82-foot-long 2014 painting, In the Land of the Dead, Stepping on the Tail of a Rainbow. The painting is like reading a story from left to right, and is inspired by 18th-century painter Soga Shohaku’s 1764 painting Gunsenzu. The Broad shows us how you can create your own version, with a story of your choice.
