What is International Flamingo Day?

Okay, we’re kidding – this day isn’t because of how fancy flamingos are, although that’s not a bad reason to celebrate these creatures! This is the birthday of American ornithologist John James Audubon.

Audubon was also an artist, and he is known for a picture of the Caribbean flamingo that he produced for the book, ‘The Birds of America’. In his honor, the Flamingo Specialist Group of the IUCN decided to celebrate a day dedicated to flamingos, and to help preserve the four flamingo species that are under threat.
