Looking for a little reading partner to hold your place in your book? This easy and fun Whale Bookmark Craft for Kids is just what you need!

All parents would love for their kids to become avid readers. While some kids naturally take to reading in their spare time, others may need some convincing!

There are many ways to get kids to enjoy reading, and the first one is to let them read books they enjoy, rather than what we consider childhood must-reads. The second option is to make it more fun, and a cute bookmark is an easy way to do it!

We have a lot of fun DIY bookmarks over here at the Artsy Craftsy Mom, so that every child is sure to find something that catches their interest – much like a book! Today, we have one for those who love large ocean mammals – a cute whale bookmark craft!

Supplies required:

  • Colored craft papers
  • Pencil
  • Craft glue
  • Sharpies
  • Scissors

How to make the Whale Bookmark Craft:

1. Download and print the whale bookmark craft template. The template includes parts of the whale, like the body, belly, eyes, tail and squirt of water. You’ll find that the template includes patterns for two whales, but you can make just one if you like!

2. Trace the patterns on craft papers of the appropriate colors and cut them out. A grey or blue would be ideal for the whale, but if you’re choosing blue, try to keep it a different shade from the blue you choose for the water squirt. Go with white for the belly and pink for the cheeks. (Yes, whales don’t have cheeks, but our whale bookmark craft does!)

3. Let’s start getting our base ready – stick the tail to the back of the whale’s body, applying glue to the back.

5. Attach the water squirt on top of the whale’s body/head. Did you know that this isn’t just water, but also includes mucus and oils? It’s a little like the whale is blowing its nose!

9. Now that the whale is complete, let’s move on to making the bookmark part. Start with a 5”x5” square piece of paper. You can choose white or go with the same color as the whale.

10. Fold the square into half diagonally to get a triangle, with the fold at the bottom. Fold the top layer of the triangle downwards, so that the corner meets the folded base, creating a gap. Fold the bottom right corner of the triangle upwards along the line created by the fold in the previous step and tuck the top end into the gap. Repeat for the corner on the left side.

11. All that’s left to do is to attach the whale on top of the corner bookmark.

12. This step is optional – if you like, you can add some outlines along the edges of the whale with a matching Sharpie.
