But wait, we don’t own pets at home. It’s probably the perfect time to get one.
At almost 6, my son really wants a pet of his own even though he gets to play with his grandparent’s pet dog whenever he visits them. It is also not practical for us to own one. So, I did the next best thing. I read books about pets to him. If you have young kids and have pets or are thinking about getting one in the near future, these 10 books are perfect for the little animal lovers at home!

This book explores the myth of ownership, and asks you a simple but an important question of what owning really means to you? This is a wonderful story depicting that we never really own any animal or human alike. We share our space and lives with them, and everyone needs their space and their choices to be happy. For 4 plus kids and their parents.
Not Norman: A Goldfish Story by Kelly Bennett
The boy in this story wanted a pet that could run, fetch and cuddle, but instead he gets a Goldfish! He names him Norman. The boy tries to swap the fish with no luck. Eventually, the boy accepts Norman, and won’t trade him for the world. It is a lovely reassuring story and “ Not Norman” has a completely different climax at the very end. See the video of the book
Let’s get a pup by Bob Graham
An absolutely beautiful book with the depiction of a real family and the fact that the animals choose their families is depicted with warmth and so much love. It’s a gorgeous book for all Pet-lovers. Highly Recommended! For 3 plus.
What pet to get by Emma Dodd
A little boy wants some wild animal as pets, and he enlists them to his mom who with calm, reassuring words lets him know why they could not have those animals as pets. Adorable book, with big pictures, perfect for the 2 plus animal lovers.
The New Puppy by The Anholts
The Anholts in the forward, have mentioned that this story is completely inspired by the time when their child had wanted a pet. Vintage illustrations add warmth to this already beautiful story.
My Cat Just Sleeps by Joanne Partis
It would be unfair to not include books on cats in this list, won’t it? In this hilarious picture book geared for the 2 plus cat lovers, a girl thinks her cat just sleeps all day. Is that true, you will have to read to find out.
Harry the Dirty Dog by Gene Zion
Harry is a white dog with black spots, who hates taking baths. So one day, he steals the bath brush and buries it in the yard and runs away from home. Along the way, he gets very dirty. But the book is so much more than that. A modern classic, highly recommended.
The Pigeon wants a Puppy by Mo Willems
This story is about how the Pigeon wants to have a puppy and constantly keeps telling the readers about how it will try to take care of the puppy and love it. However, what will the Pigeon think when its wish actually comes true? IF you enjoy the Pigeon series, you will love this one as well.
Officer Buckle & Gloria by Peggy Rathmann
Officer Buckle is boring students every day with his safety talks. Students and don’t pay any attention to him. Then one day, Officer Buckle gets a side-kick named Gloria. While Officer Buckle is up before the audience, Gloria is play acting the tip right behind him. Suddenly the children are sitting in their seats, laughing and enjoying the show. Amazing book, highly recommended!
What Pet Should I Get? (Classic Seuss)
This previously never-before-seen picture book by Dr. Seuss about making up one’s mind is the literary equivalent of buried treasure!
