We’ve been waiting for spring and now that it’s here, we’re super excited! Spring is the season for flowers, and today, the focus is particularly on one pretty bloom – the cherry blossom!
Spring is also when the cherry blossom trees flower, which is why the National Cherry Blossom Festival is held during this time. And no, the festival isn’t held in Asia – it’s in Washington D.C.!
History of the National Cherry Blossom Festival
In 1906, American botanist David Fairchild brought 1000 cherry trees from a Japanese nursery and planted them near his home in Maryland. The trees thrived, everyone loved the cherry blossoms and there was more demand to plant trees in the capital.
After a lot of diplomatic to and fro, over 3000 trees were shipped from Japan to America. On 27th March 1912, the first cherry blossom tree was planted by the then-First Lady Helen Herron Taft and Viscountess Chinda, the wife of the then-Japanese ambassador.
Many years later, the first Cherry Blossom Festival was held in 1934, and it became a regular annual event. The event is celebrated with parades, floats, bands and lots of music! It starts on 20th March and runs for a month. If you can’t make it to Washington D.C. in time for the festival, that’s okay – you can make these gorgeous cherry blossom crafts instead!
