Cute and Easy DIY Ladybug Valentine Card
Your lovebug deserves a card as cute as them, and we’ve got just the one! Check out our DIY Ladybug Valentine Card, an easy craft for kids.
The term ‘lovebug’ is really common, and we often use it as a term of endearment for our loved ones. I always thought it was just another term, like ‘dear’ or ‘darling’, but I just recently realized that there is indeed an insect named love bug!
What’s more, love bugs aren’t exactly bugs; they’re flies! In fact, love bug is another name for the March fly. One reason for the nickname is the red markings on the head, and another reason is that mates cling to each other for days – even when flying!
Fun Facts about Love Bugs:
- Love bugs are found in warm, sub-tropical places like Costa Rica, Guatemala, and Mexico
- They’re good for the environment, since they eat decaying vegetation, enriching the soil
- Love bugs are preyed on by foraging birds and armadillos
- Unlike mosquitoes, love bugs stay away from humans and human homes
- They can be a nuisance for cars, clogging up air filters and damaging engines
Well, today we have a bug for you that’s anything but a nuisance; it is literally a bug that brings love! Here is a cute and easy DIY ladybug Valentine card that kids can make, and all you need are basic craft supplies!
Cute and Easy DIY Ladybug Valentine Card

Supplies required:
- Heavy-weight craft paper in different colors
- Medium-weight craft paper in different colors
- Brad pins
- Sharpies
- Pencil
- Craft glue
- A pair of scissors
How to make the DIY Ladybug Valentine Card:
1. Download and print the DIY Ladybug Valentine Card template. The template includes a circular base for the ladybug’s body, a curved piece with a flat edge for the ladybug’s head, two wings and two strips for the antennae. You’ll also find three hearts – the large one is for the body and the smaller ones are for the antennae.

2. Trace the parts of the template on craft paper of the appropriate colors and cut them out. Use thick craft paper for the ladybug’s body, head and wings. You can choose light or medium-weight craft paper for the rest. While ladybugs appear in nature in different colors, we’ve chosen to go with the classic red for today’s craft. Make sure you choose brad pins that match the colors you’ve chosen.

3. Let’s start our DIY ladybug Valentine card by assembling the head. Attach the 2 small hearts to the ends of the thin strips as shown below. These are the ladybug’s antennae.

4. Next, stick the antennae to the curved edge of the ladybug’s head cutout. Put the head aside for now.

5. We’re moving on to the body – stick the large heart on the circle body base.

6. Take one of the wing cutouts and place it on the base so that it covers almost half of it. Make sure the pointy end of the wing is in line with the circle’s border, as shown below.

7. Similarly, place the other wing cutout right next to the previous one so that almost the entire base is covered.

8. Without changing the positions of the wings, secure them in place with the brad pins. Keep the brad pins as close to the edge as you can.

9. Generally, ladybugs have spots, but our DIY ladybug Valentine card has hearts instead! Use a black Sharpie or marker to draw little hearts all over the wings.

10. Bring back the ladybug’s head and apply some glue along the flat edge.

11. Attach the head pattern to the base where you applied glue in the previous step.

12. That’s it – your DIY ladybug Valentine card is ready! Now all you need to do is slide the wings to the side so you can write a message on the heart inside.

Okay, how cute is this DIY ladybug Valentine card? We love how the entire ladybug features so many hearts, truly living up to its ‘lovebug’ name! This is an easy last-minute craft for kids, and the only things you need are craft paper and brad pins. Now go on, make your own lovebug card, and use him to give your special someone your message!
