We love pretend play here at Artsy Craftsy Mom, which is why we’re big fans of DIY puppets, dolls and pretend food. That’s also why we enjoy making our own little felt plushies – you’ll see that we have quite a collection here, and we love that they can be used in many ways!

Things to do with a plushie:

  • Use it as a pencil topper by creating a little gap at the bottom
  • Attach a Popsicle stick to the bottom and turn it into a puppet
  • Attach a ring or clasp to the plushie and use it as a bag charm or key ring
  • Include it in your small-world play, like with Lego minifigures or Playmobil figures
  • Keep it in your pocket or on your desk, just to have some company

Another great thing about plushies is that they’re really easy to make, and are an excellent starting point for sewing beginners. So if you’re looking for a project like that, we’ve got just the one for you today – a cute little felt caterpillar craft!

3. Let’s start with the cute little face of our felt caterpillar craft! With a pen or marker, draw eyes and a smile on the circle of the caterpillar’s face. Now using black thread, sew along the marked lines so the face is ready.

4. The remaining green felt circles are for the caterpillar’s body. Let’s get them ready by sewing on the little yellow spots on them, placing them somewhere at the top of the circle.

5. Time to start assembling our felt caterpillar craft! Take out the body of the caterpillar. Each section of the caterpillar will require two legs and a circle which you sewed in the previous step.

7. Use green thread to sew around the outer edge of the circle, so that the legs are sewn into place. Use a blanket stitch and stop sewing a few inches before you reach the starting point so you have a gap.

8. Stuff some cotton wool or felt scraps through this gap. Make sure you don’t overstuff the circle or your stitches will break. Sew and close the opening.

We think this cute little felt caterpillar craft is the perfect accompaniment to The Very Hungry Caterpillar book by Eric Carle. If you’ll notice, we also have an apple that’s been bitten into! Let kids get adventurous with more felt, and encourage them to create the remaining foods from the book too!
