When we think about the French Revolution, most of us are likely to think of Marie Antoinette, who is believed to have made the famous quote ‘Let them eat cake!’ While that may or may not have been said by her, one thing is true – she certainly was the main character in the story of the French Revolution!

So why are we talking about the French Revolution and France crafts for kids today? Well, it’s because we have entered the month of La fête nationale, also referred to as Bastille Day, which falls on the 14th of July. In reality, the storming of the Bastille happened in 1789, while the actual occasion of the feast was exactly one year later, on 14th July in 1790. They managed to merge both national events into a single holiday – genius!

The first feast was a grand affair that began at four in the morning, in the presence of the King and other royals. Today, after being made an official holiday in 1880, the day sees some impressive military parades on the Champs-Elysées as well as beautiful fireworks displays. Families get together for picnics and other celebrations and to participate in the festivities.

If you’ll be in Paris or anywhere in France in July, you’re likely to be able to be a part of the celebrations, but if you aren’t, don’t worry! We’ve got a collection of France crafts for kids here today, which will be perfect to learn more about this amazing country and its people. Viens on y va!
