These guys look great & are so easy to make! Check out our handprint elephant craft for kids, which goes perfectly with a lesson about elephants!
Imagine having a tooth that is so long it comes out of your mouth – doesn’t sound very good, does it? However, for one animal, this is actually something of pride and honor – the elephant!
The elephant is the largest mammal on land, but it’s also one of the gentlest creatures on the planet. There are some endearing stories about friendships between humans and elephants, and you can read about some of them. Here are a few books for elephant lovers.

Since 12th August is World Elephant Day, it’s a great opportunity to learn more about elephants and while we’re doing that, let’s have some fun with a cute craft – a handprint elephant craft for kids!
Handsome Handprint Elephant Craft for Kids
Supplies required:
- Colored cardstock papers
- Pencil
- Craft glue
- Googly eyes
- A Pair of scissors
- Sharpies
How to make the Handprint Elephant Craft:
1. Download and print the handprint elephant craft template. The template includes parts of the elephant, like head, outer ears, inner ears, trunk, tail and handprint body. If you want to make your own handprint, place your hand on the craft paper of your choice, and draw an outline of your hand with a pencil. Then cut out the paper along the outline.
2. Trace the parts of the template on craft papers of your choice and cut them out. We’ve chosen grey for the elephant’s body, head, ears and trunk, but you can also choose light blue or brown – or go crazy with a pink elephant! The inner ears are pink while the tail tip is black.
3. Take out your colored Sharpies! Choose a marker that matches the base color of your handprint elephant craft. Draw outlines inside the head, outer ears, trunk and handprint body.
4. Stick the inner ears inside the outer ears, placing them right in the middle.
5. Apply glue on the edges of the ears and attach them to either side of the elephant’s head, so that the ears stick on the back of the head.
6. No elephant worth his salt will be seen without a trunk, and our handprint elephant craft is no different! Attach the trunk in the middle of the elephant’s head, on the bottom half.
7. Okay, put aside the head and let’s move on to the body. Stick the tail on the tip of the thumb of the handprint.
8. Time to put everything together! Apply glue on the wrist/palm end of the handprint and stick the head on top of it.
9. We’re nearing the end! Stick the googly eyes on the upper part of the head with glue. Finally, stick the cheek circles on either side of the trunk.
There you go – your handsome handprint elephant craft is complete!
We’d recommend a fun activity to go with this handprint elephant craft – learn about the difference between African and Asian elephants, and try to make changes to your craft so you can create one of each. It’s a great exercise and by making crafts, kids are sure to remember it better!
