When is Mardi Gras?

Mardi Gras this year falls on 13th February, and the date depends upon the dates of Lent. Lent is a Christian observance that starts on Ash Wednesday and ends around the Easter holidays, lasting about 40 days. This is a period of fasting and simple living, and that’s why Mardi Gras is celebrated as the last day of feasting on rich foods just before the start of Lent.

Mardi Gras has different names in different countries:

• United Kingdom – Pancake Day or Shrove Tuesday
• Czech Republic – Masopust
• Germany – Schmutziger Donnerstag or Fetter Donnerstag
• Italy – Martedì Grasso
• Sweden – Fettisdagen
