So why do kids prefer mittens anyway? Mittens are warmer than gloves because the fingers heat each other up with their own heat, compared to individually wrapped fingers. Kids with sensory issues may also prefer feeling their fingers together. However, mittens do limit finger dexterity especially when it comes to touchscreen devices!

No such problem with today’s set of mittens! While our Origami mittens craft does not keep you warm, they do look super cute and are really easy to make!

Adorable Origami Mittens Craft for Kids

Supplies required:

  • Origami paper
  • White craft paper
  • Scissors
  • Craft glue

How to make the Origami Mittens Craft:

1. From your Origami paper, cut out a rectangle with a length twice as much as the breadth.

2. Fold the rectangle in half lengthwise and then unfold so you have a crease parallel to the short side.

2. Next, fold the rectangle horizontally and then unfold. 

4. Fold inside 1 cm from a short edge. 

5. Turn the pattern to the other side.

6. Fold one of the longer edges inward, to meet the long crease in the middle.

7. Similarly, fold in the other longer side.

8. Now, fold the top edge all the way down to meet the bottom edge. 

9. Fold the left bottom corner diagonally upward to meet the top right corner. Take a note of the yellow line in the image below.

10. Fold along the yellow lines in the image above.

11. Unfold and slightly open the pattern along the creases made in the previous fold.

12. Fold and flatten the pattern along the creases. This is now the thumb of your Origami mittens craft.

13. Fold in the corners of the top two corners. 

14. Now, fold in the corners of the thumb part.

15. Turn the origami pattern to the other side so that all the folds are underneath. Cut out a strip from white paper and glue it along the bottom 1 cm fold to complete the Origami mittens craft.

You can make this Origami mittens craft in different colors, and kids can try to match any mittens they may own. You can also string these together on a string to make a custom banner for winter.
