If you’re a kid from the ’80s-’90s, you’re sure to know how big a deal Super Mario is! Getting access to this game itself was a task, and when we did, it was like we’d hit gold at the end of the rainbow!

It’s amazing how much influence a fictional character like Mario can have on an entire generation. And this isn’t a soldier, superhero or prince – Mario is a plumber, an everyday man, who does heroic things. Now that’s my kind of hero!

Super Mario has come a long way since it was first launched by Nintendo and there have been many versions, including 3-D games and movies. In fact, the Super Mario series holds the Guinness record for being the most successful gaming franchise of all time. That’s not all – Mario is considered to be the longest running video game character in the world!

Here’s another fun fact – since the 10th of March, MAR10, looks like ‘Mario’, it has been decided to celebrate the day as Super Mario Day – how cool is that! Since we’re in March right now, it seems to be a good time to relive the fun we had playing the game with our kids – through some super fun Mario crafts and activities!

1. Mario Brothers Pipe Craft

The Mario brothers have to face many challenges on their way to rescue the princess, and Piranha plants often feature among them. These are carnivorous plants based on the Venus flytrap, and gobble up anything that comes near them! Initially Piranha plants were seen in pipes, but later they began to appear all over the place[1]. Fab Every Day has a craft that features a Piranha plant popping out of a pipe – a new challenge for Mario!

2. Mario Board Game

Mushroom Kingdom is the venue for most of Mario’s adventures, and it was a fantasy world that was constantly changing. The mushrooms in this world are magical – eating them helps Mario become bigger and get special powers. We love this Mushroom Kingdom-inspired board game from Teach Me Mommy that also encourages young kids who’re learning their numbers.

3. Super Mario Paper Garland

Mario is seen wearing a red shirt and blue overalls, but this is a carefully chosen color palette and design. Since the game was developed in the 1980s and technology wasn’t as advanced as it is now, the makers had to use some hacks to make the character work. Mario wears a hat because it was difficult to create hair that looked somewhat realistic. He has a moustache so the mouth could be hidden and the contrasting colors of his outfit helped make the movements more prominent. If your kids enjoyed hearing about Mario’s appearance, they may also be interested in decorating their room with a fun paper garland from Miz Flurry!

4. Mario Mushroom Origami

There are many mushroom types in Mario’s world, and each one has a different function. Apparently this was inspired by folk tales about magical mushrooms. The Super Mushroom helps Mario become bigger and stronger, while the Mini Mushroom shrinks the character. 5. Mario Kart Paper Plate Craft

Super Mario Kart is a racing video game based on the original Mario game, and features most of the main characters. Players take control of one of the characters and then race against the others in levels of varying difficulty. This game has spawned numerous copy cats, but the original still remains popular! In reality, the backstory for Mushroom Kingdom is quite dark. King Koopa, the villain who has magical powers, turned the people of the kingdom into blocks and goombas. So when Mario destroys a block or goomba, he doesn’t realize that it is actually a person! Of course, this story stays wrapped up for the most parts, and understandably so! So lets move our attention on this fun printable game from Instructables where you can knock down things without feeling guilty!

8. Super Mario DIY Yoshi Eggs

Yoshi is Mario’s cute little dinosaur friend whose real name is ‘T. Yoshisaur Munchakoopas’ Although Mario was launched in 1983, Yoshi came in much later, in 1990 and became so popular that he got his own series later. Yoshi has many powers – he can eat up an enemy, and later spit it out to attack another one! Yoshi can also create an egg around himself to be used as a shield against attacks. 9. Cardboard Tube Mario and Luigi

Luigi was developed after Mario, and the makers wanted it to be similar to Mario. They decided to name him Luigi since in Japanese, ‘luigi’ means ‘similar’. Initially, Mario and Luigi were the same height, but later Luigi got taller. Mario and Luigi are twins, although Luigi came in after Mario and is hence considered younger. 10. Super Mario Shadow Box Frame

Since Mario is so popular, fans have created many groups and communities dedicated to the character and his life. From them, we get the information that Mario is in his mid-20s and is only 5’1″ tall. If Mario was real, he could run and swim for 3-4 miles and he’d have completed the Super Mario Bros game! After Mario and Luigi, the most popular character in the game is probably the princess, known as Princess Peach or Princess Toadstool since she lives in a castle with the Toads. Princess Peach has the most video game appearances of any female character in the world. Princess Peach has the power to break the curse on Mushroom Kingdom. In many games, she needs to be rescued by Mario, while in others she offers support to Mario in battle. Later on, she got her own game series called Super Princess Peach. 12. Super Mario Mason Jar Craft

It’s unbelievable how mason jars can be used for practically any project, and it also features in this list of Mario crafts for kids! This project from C’mon Get Crafty features both Mario and Luigi, having fun on the jars! Did you know that initially, Luigi was an exact replica of Mario? The only difference was that the color red was replaced with green. In the years to come, however, Luigi was made taller and given a unique identity of his own.

13. Mario Magnet Board

Mario was created by Japanese game designer, Shigeru Miyamoto. The character first appeared in the game Donkey Kong, which featured a large ape throwing barrels and who had to be stopped by the hero character. This hero was originally named Jumpman, and later renamed to Mario. Mario does quite a lot of jumping in the video games, as well as in this magnetic board game by Laboratory 424!

14. Perler Bead Mario Minis

It's Super Mario Day on 10th March and we're gearing up with some awesome Super Mario Crafts and Activities for kids to have fun with!

If you like playing with perler beads, you’ll enjoy making these Mario characters from Homemade Heather, which include Mario, Luigi, Goomba, Toad, Yoshi and Turtle. There’s also a Perler bead version of the Piranha plant, and we wish there was one of the villain Bowser too! Bowser was originally meant to be an ox, but Miyamoto’s sketches got misinterpreted by the animator as a turtle, and that’s how we got the Bowser we know today!

15. Printable Super Mario Pinwheel

Nintendo, the company behind Super Mario, makes a big deal out of the Mar10 Super Mario celebration every year. In 2017, the company collaborated with Starlight Children’s Foundation to design new Super Mario themed hospital gowns for children. In fact, a survey in the ’90s found that American children recognized Mario more than Mickey Mouse! Catch onto the enthusiasm too with this fun pin wheel craft from Nintendo.

Besides making these crafts, there are other things you can do to celebrate the iconic video game. you can throw a Mario-theme party using a red and blue color theme or dress up in those colors.
