Have you noticed that capybaras have become popular lately? For some time now, there have been many memes and cute videos of capybaras floating around, and even capybara-themed clothes and toys in the market. We’re not sure what triggered this phase, but we certainly aren’t complaining!
One possibility is that capybaras are closely associated with Japan, and the rise in Japan’s popularity probably triggered the capybara craze. Another possibility is that capybaras are extremely ‘chill’ animals, which probably resonates with a lot of people from Gen Z!
Now, we love capybaras too, so we’re joining in on the trend with a cute little capybara hug bookmark craft! It’s made entirely out of paper and is really easy for the little ones, too!

Supplies required:
- Craft papers in different colors
- Pencil
- A pair of scissors
- Craft glue
- Markers in different colors
How to make the Capybara Hug Bookmark:
1. Download and print the Capybara Hug Bookmark template. The template contains parts of the capybara, like the head, body, snout, cheeks, and arms.

2. Trace the parts of the template on craft paper of the appropriate colors and cut them out. Capybaras are mostly brown, ranging from yellow-brown to reddish-brown, so you can choose any shade of brown for all the parts except the cheeks, which can be pink. It may be a good idea to use a different shade of brown for the snout so it stands out.

3. Let’s start making our capybara hug bookmark by assembling the head. Stick the snout in the middle of the capybara’s face, as shown below.

4. Glue the cheeks on either side of the capybara’s snout, as shown below.

5. Take out your markers – it’s time to add details to our capybara. Use a brown marker to draw the inner ears and use a black marker to draw eyes, nostrils and a mouth. If you think that a capybara looks a little like a guinea pig or a beaver, you’re not wrong!

6. Put the head aside – it’s time to move on to the body of our capybara hug bookmark! Apply glue on the left edge of the capybara’s body, towards the top. Attach one of the arms here, so that the arm is pointing downwards as shown below.

7. Repeat the previous step on the opposite side, so that the capybara now has all its limbs. By the way, capybaras have webbed feet, which enable them to move in water!

8. Finally, apply glue on the top edge of the body of the capybara hug bookmark. Attach the head here. If you like, you can shade in the ends of the capybara’s limbs with a brown marker.

9. To use the capybara hug bookmark, simply slide the top edge of your page under the capybara’s arms.

Now that you know how to make the capybara hug bookmark, you can go ahead and make many and hand them out to your friends! In a world that’s moving increasingly towards screens and away from books, cute bookmarks like this can make reading time more fun for kids and encourage them to spend more time with books. After all, spending some time on a little craft paper is completely worth it when you see your child engrossed in a book!
