Easy DIY Clay Monster Craft for Halloween
Supplies required:
- Foam clay in different colors
- Clay molding tools
- Sharpies in different colors
How to make the DIY Clay Monster Craft:
1. To make our monster today, we need foam clay in a few different colors. You need one base color, a contrasting color as well as black and white. When it comes to monsters, any color can be a base – a fluorescent green or a bright purple! We’ve gone with the latter in this case, starting with a smooth ball of purple clay.
2. Roll the clay ball against a plain and even surface to form a cylinder shape.
3. Press the cylinder shape gently to make it flat on the top and bottom. These flat sides will be the front and back o the DIY clay monster.
4. Use the pin-head clay tool to make a hole at one end of the cylinder, about half a centimeter deep. This end will now be the base of the monster, and the hole will give the monster some stability so it can stand on its own.
5. At the end opposite to the base, i.e. the monster’s head, make 2 holes using the pin-head tool. The DIY clay monster looks a little like a pig’s snout at this point, but you’ll soon see why we need those holes!
6. Time to take out your contrast-color clay. We’ve used orange here, so it really pops against the purple. Pinch out two small pieces of orange clay, making sure they’re of equal size.
7. Shape the orange clay into horns, with a wide end and a pointy end. Make sure the wide end is the right size to fit into the holes made in Step 5.
8. Attach the clay horns inside the holes on the monster’s head. Yes, it’s beginning to look like a monster already!
9. Pinch out two small pieces of purple clay of the same size. Roll them into smooth balls. We’re going to turn them into the monster’s feet.
10. Attach the clay balls at the bottom of the monster’s body, towards the front. Use white clay to make a smooth disc – it should be smaller than the width of the monster’s body. Then make a smaller black disc and place it on the white one to make the monster’s eye. Finish up with a tiny white dot to make the eye look more ‘alive’.
11. Make a slight depression on the front of the monster’s body, a little below the horns. The depression should be just large enough to hold the eye.
12. Place the eye on the hole, ensuring the white part of the eye is on the same level as the monster’s base, and that the black part pops out a little.
13. Pinch out two tiny bits of white clay and shape them into little circles. Gently pinch a small part of each circle so they look like teeth. Attach them to the DIY clay monster’s body, below the eye.
14. Moving on to the monster’s arms! Take two pieces of purple clay and shape them into teardrops.
15. Attach the pointy ends of the arms on either side of the monster’s body. At this point, you can take out your Sharpies to add some details if you like. We’ve used a black Sharpie to draw a smile across the monster’s teeth, and an orange Sharpie to draw stripes on the horns.
16. Use the knife tool to make tiny lines in the monster’s feet.
Well, your DIY clay monster is finished! And he’s looking absolutely adorable!
We love how you can change things around with this DIY clay monster to create a different version every time. Change the colors of the clay, make two eyes instead of one, or add some spots with clay or markers. Monsters have no restrictions when it comes to how they should look, and neither should you!
