Colorful DIY Clay Rocket Tutorial for Kids
This DIY clay rocket tutorial is easy enough for beginners to try, even kids! all you need is some clay and a few tools and you’re set to launch!
Outer space has always captivated man’s imagination, and we love wondering what really lies out there. Could there be aliens? Is there another place that we can inhabit, like Earth? How far can we really go?
Well, that’s why humans have put so much time and effort into creating special equipment that can take us beyond our planet’s atmosphere so that we can get information about what’s out there. We’ve learnt a lot, but there also lies a lot more left to discover!
In honor of all the brave men and women who’ve dedicated their lives to this mission, we’re making a rocket craft today – a DIY clay rocket! It’s a fun colorful project that even young kids can try, so let’s get cracking!

Supplies required:
- Foam clay in different colors
- Clay sculpting tools
How to make the DIY clay rocket:
1. Take out your different colors of clay and let’s get to work! You can make the DIY clay rocket in any color you like – for instance, we’ve used blue as the base color, but you can also choose purple. Take a ball of blue or purple clay and roll it into a circle. Then stretch it slightly into an oval shape.
2. Make one end of the oval slightly narrower than the other. Flatten the oval so you get an elongated disc-like shape. This will form the base of our DIY clay rocket, also known as the ‘body tube‘.
3. Take a small ball of red or orange clay and shape it into a triangle about the same thickness as the rocket base. The base of the triangle should be the same size as the narrow end of the rocket base because that’s where it will go next!
4. Attach the triangle to the narrow end of the rocket base. This part of the rocket is called the ‘nose cone‘. Next, take two small balls of red or orange clay and shape them into teardrops.
5. Flatten the teardrop shapes and slightly curve the inside edge of both, as shown below.
6. Attach the teardrop shapes on either side of the rocket. They look like fins, and that’s exactly what they’re called! Take a small ball of green clay and roll it into a thick sausage as shown below.
7. Hold the rope from both ends and pinch them together. Turn the pinched ends downward slightly and curve out the inner edge so it looks like a croissant. Yes, we need all kinds of shapes for our DIY clay rocket!
8. Attach your green croissant to the opposite end of the rocket to make its ‘tail’. Pinch out three tiny bits of yellow clay and roll them out into balls. Flatten them to form tiny circles and stick them on the rocket’s tail.
9. Now take a piece of white clay and flatten it into a disc. This will be the window of the rocket – attach it in the middle of the rocket base.
10. Take a piece of yellow clay and roll it out to form a long strip. The strip should be long enough to go around the white disc, i.e. the window on the rocket.
11. Place the yellow strip on the edge of the window.
12. Take the same red or orange clay you used earlier and pinch out two small balls. Shape teardrops out of them, making one smaller than the other. Attach them together as shown.
13. Flatten out the joint so it looks like a single shape. Pinch out a small piece of yellow clay and repeat the previous step but make sure you end up with a shape that’s smaller than the red one. Stick the yellow shape on top of the red/orange one. This is going to be the rocket’s flame as it takes off into space!
14. Attach the flame to the rocket tail by pressing underneath.
15. Let it dry completely – and your DIY clay rocket is all done!
We love how colorful our DIY clay rocket is, and we also love the fact that you can switch out the colors to make it your own. If you’re feeling a little extra, maybe try making your initials out of clay and attaching it to the body of the rocket – a custom creation that’s totally ‘you’!
