We often get messages asking for crafts that are a little easier, so that even the younger kids in the house can try them out. They’re a little frustrated after seeing their older siblings making lots of amazing but complicated stuff with their hands!

That’s why we’ve come up with something super simple today – a handprint hedgehog craft!

So why is this craft perfect for little kids?

First of all, it’s got handprints! Young kids will enjoy seeing their hands come to life in the form of the hedgehog’s spines. The assembly of the craft is fairly simple and has just a few steps. The craft uses pretty basic shapes, so even cutting beginners will have it easy. Googly eyes make it so much more fun and finally, you get a cute little woodland friend!

So if you’re ready to have fun with a simple handprint hedgehog craft, so are we!

Supplies required:

  • Colored craft papers
  • Craft glue
  • Pencil
  • Googly eyes

How to make the Handprint Hedgehog Craft:

1. Download the handprint hedgehog craft template. The template contains parts of the hedgehog including the body, ears, nose, eyes and handprint spines.

2. Trace the parts of the template on craft paper and cut them out. We’ve used different shades of brown for the hedgehog’s body and handprints, along with black for the nose. You can either use the handprints from the template or get your kids to place their hands on brown craft paper and draw an outline and then cut them out.

3. Our first step in making our handprint hedgehog craft is – yes, you guessed it – the spines! Take the handprints and place them side by side so the palms overlap right under the pinkies.

4. Stick the hedgehog’s body in the middle of the handprint combo, so the joint is now hidden under the body.

5. Attach the outer ears to the top of the head, sticking them on the left and right sides.

6. Cut out a small rectangle from cardboard or a thick cardstock. Stick it in the middle of the body cutout. This step is to give our hedgehog’s nose a little three-dimensional appearance.

7. Time to stick the nose on top of the cardstock so it appears raised from the rest of the handprint hedgehog craft.

8. Let’s finish up the nose by sticking on the tiny black nose cutout in the center. Follow that up by sticking the inner ears inside the outer ears.

9. Now stick two googly eyes in the space above the nose. We’re almost done!

10. All that’s left to do is to take out your black Sharpie and draw a smile under the hedgehog’s nose. Next, use the pink Sharpie to draw cheeks on either side of the nose. There you go – you’re done!

Now it can’t really get any simpler than that, can it? This is a great craft for National Hedgehog Day on 2nd February or for a lesson on woodland animals. It may just lead to a lot of questions about why the animals have spines! Handprint crafts are always great for gifting to loved ones, and this guy would fit perfectly on a plain card. Simply write a heartfelt message inside, and watch your grandparent, aunt or uncle light up when they see it!
