American Flag Day is observed on the 14th of June every year, and as its name suggests, it is meant to be an occasion to honor the flag of the United States. But to do that, we need to learn a little about the flag’s meaning and its history.

Did you know these facts about the American Flag?

  • The American flag features 50 stars and 13 stripes. Each star represents an American state, and the stripes symbolize the original thirteen colonies.
  • The colors are significant too – red represents bravery and sacrifice, white symbolizes purity and innocence, and blue is a representation of justice and perseverance.
  • The current American flag is a result of multiple design changes, each one representing the nation’s growth
  • America’s national anthem is ‘The Star-Spangled Banner“, which is based on a poem written in 1814, inspired by the U.S. flag then, known as the Star-Spangled Banner.
  • American Flag Day became an official observance on the 3rd of August, 1949, when Harry S. Truman was President.

Of course, there’s a lot more to learn about the flag, and we think that the best way to dig into history is with some fun American flag day corner bookmarks! Take out your craft supplies and get ready to celebrate the vibrant colors of the iconic stars and stripes!

How to make the American Flag Day Corner Bookmarks:

1. We’re featuring two types of American flag day corner bookmarks today – a heart-shaped one and a star-shaped one. We’ll start with the heart-shaped one first. For this, cut out two hearts – one each from red and blue paper. Now cut the blue heart into two halves down the middle. Take one half and cut off a small bit from the bottom, so you get a piece as shown in the image below.

6. Cut out a square piece of white paper to make the bookmark. Fold the square into half diagonally, so you get a triangle.

7. Find the middle of the base of this triangle, and fold inwards from this point, on either side. You’ll get a diamond shape.

8. Unfold the folds made in the previous step. Now you have two small triangles side by side, with a diamond in the middle.

9. Bring up the flap of this ‘diamond’ and let it meet the center of the two small triangles. You now have a little gap between this flap and the lower one.

10. Next fold the two small triangles down again. Tuck in the ends of both triangles into the gap created in the previous step, so you have a pocket of sorts.

Stick the stars one inside the other, so they appear in a concentric fashion. Make another bookmark as per steps 6-10, and stick the stars on it. That’s it – both your American flag day corner bookmarks are now done!
