Easy Dinosaur Egg Hatch Craft for Kids
Kids will love this dinosaur egg hatch craft – easy to make and fun to play with! It’ll go great with a lesson about fossils, or the Mesozoic Era.
One of the most iconic scenes of Jurassic Park is the one where Alan, Ellie and Ian follow Hammond into the lab and are able to witness a baby raptor hatching out of its egg. Imagine being able to watch such an event live!
Of course, that was a movie and it’s not possible to see a dinosaur egg hatching in real life – at least for now. So we’re going to do the next best thing – make our own dinosaur egg hatch craft! This way we don’t have to travel to far-off labs or risk monsters coming at us later!
Easy Dinosaur Egg Hatch Craft for Kids
Supplies required:
- Colored craft papers
- Popsicle sticks
- Brad pin
- Pencil
- A pair of scissors
- Craft glue
- Sharpies
How to make the Easy Dinosaur Egg Hatch Craft for Kids:
1. Download and print the dinosaur egg hatch craft template. The template includes parts of the egg and dinosaur. There is a whole egg and two egg halves, along with dinosaur parts like head, body, belly, arms and spines.
2. Trace the patterns on craft paper of the appropriate colors and cut them out. Instead of white, choose a light brown, beige or even light grey for the egg – this is a dinosaur egg we’re talking about! For the dinosaur, you can choose any color you like – green, red or purple! Go with a darker shade for the spines and a lighter one for the belly so these parts stand out from the rest of the dinosaur egg hatch craft.
3. Let’s begin with the egg – our baby dino’s first home! Take the two egg halves and stick the brown spots on the lower half.
4. Turn around the lower half of the egg and apply glue on the back, along the curved border – leave the jagged border free.
5. Stick the bottom half of the egg on the full egg cutout, aligning the lower curved edges, as shownin the image below. You now have a ‘pocket’ with the jagged edge as the opening.
6. Place the top half of the egg on top of the lower half so the edges fit perfectly. Take a brad pin and mark a small hole on the left edge of the egg, where the top half and bottom half overlap.
7. Insert the brad pin through the hole marked in the previous step. Close the brad pin on the back of the egg to secure the egg patterns together. You should now be able to open the top half of the egg using the brad as a hinge.
8. Put aside the egg – it’s time to assemble the star of our dinosaur egg hatch craft, the dinosaur! Attach one spiny part on the back of the dinosaur’s head. Stick the belly on the dinosaur’s body, aligning the curved edges.
9. Attach the other spiny part to the outer edge of the dinosaur’s body.
10. Apply glue to the top end of the dinosaur’s body and attach the head here. Your dinosaur egg hatch craft is taking shape!
11. Stick one arm on the dinosaur’s body so that the straight edge of the arm meets the edge of the belly pattern. Stick the other arm on the back of the dino’s body so that it is in line with the first arm and sticks out. Stick the eye on the dino head and use a black Sharpie or gel pen to draw a nose. Cut out a little notch to make the dinosaur’s mouth.
12. Your dinosaur’s ready – now it’s time to assemble your dinosaur egg hatch craft! Bring back the egg and open up the top half using the brad pin as a hinge. Remember the pocket we made in Step 5? Insert the dinosaur in this pocket.
13. Once your dinosaur is safely inside, close the top egg half to cover it.
14. If you like, you can use a brown Sharpie to draw outlines on your egg halves.
There you go – your dinosaur egg hatch craft is complete and now you can go ahead and play with it! We love how easy this craft is, and you can make it multiple times with different color combinations. Now go ahead and read a little more about dinosaurs and how they lived!
