When you think of Origami, we mostly see people making things like birds, fish, flowers, butterflies or maybe cute boxes and baskets. But an Origami dinosaur? Not so common!

But that’s the magic of Origami – there is no limit to what you can make. As long as there is space left in the paper to fold, you can keep going!

We love this part of Origami, and that’s why we’ve experimented with Origami octopuses, mushrooms and even ghosts! Today, we bring you another fun folding challenge – an Origami dinosaur craft!

Supplies required:

  • Colored craft paper or origami paper
  • Craft glue
  • A pair of scissors
  • Sharpies

How to make the Origami Dinosaur Craft:

1. Start making the Origami dinosaur craft with a square sheet of paper, in any color of your choice. We’ve gone with green here, but purple or red would also be excellent choices.

2. Fold the square sheet in half, diagonally, from both sides and then unfold them. You should get two diagonal lines crisscrossing through the center.

3. Take the top right corner and bring it into the diagonal line, ensuring that the right side is aligned with the diagonal. This leaves a tiny triangle above the fold.

4. Fold the tiny triangle inward, so the edge of the triangle aligns along the diagonal.

5. Unfold the last fold.

6. You see the point where the diagonals intersect? Take the folded flap from step 3 and fold it from that center point, as shown below.

7. Flatten out the fold so you get a triangle shape with a really long base.

8. Repeat steps 3-7 on the opposite side. You’ll get an elongated diamond shape, as shown above, with two pointy ends on the top and bottom, and two small inner flaps facing downward.

9. Take the top pointy end and fold it downward to meet the ends of the inner flaps. This gives you a small triangle shape with the pointy end facing down.

10. Take the two corners of this small triangle’s base and fold them inward, as shown below.

11. Turn the origami pattern to the other side. You have a shape with a trapezoid at the top and a long triangle at the bottom. At this point, your Origami dinosaur craft resembles a kite more than a dinosaur!

12. Separate the triangle part of your kite by lifting that flap up.

13. Unflod the flap all the way to the top, exposing the central line between the two folds. You now have two connected triangles, a long one facing up and a short one facing down.

14. From the left corner of the triangles, fold the long triangle to the right, as shown below.

15. Unfold the last fold and repeat the previous step on the other side.

16. Unfold the last fold. You now have the same connected triangles, but there are two new creases running across the long triangle.

17. Fold the bottom halves of these creases inward, so the folds now pop up.

18. Turn the pattern to its side and flatten it so you get a gun-shape as shown below. We’re more than halfway done with our Origami dinosaur craft!

19. You now have two triangles, one on the top and one at the bottom. Fold the upper flap of the bottom triangle upward, as shown above. This gives you a new triangle flap.

20. Fold the top end of the new triangle inward.

21. Now, fold the flap inward again.

22. Turn the current pattern to the other side and repeat steps 19-21 on that side. These are the tiny arms of our Origami dinosaur craft.

23. Make small (1 cm) creases along the opposite ends of the previous folds.

24. Fold the creases inward. These are the back legs.

25. Fold the longer pointy end at the top down, to create the dinosaur head.

26. Unfold the last fold.

27. Fold the previous part along the creases, making space for the neck.

28. Fold the pointy end in the front towards the back.

29. Unfold the previous fold and fold it again inward, so the ends are tucked in and not visible. Cut out a small piece of white paper and use a Sharpie to draw an eye on it.

30. Attach the eye on the head and use a black Sharpie to draw a nose and mouth. Your Origami dinosaur craft is complete!
