Cute and Easy Little Red Riding Hood Puppet Craft
You’ve heard the story, it’s now time to put on a show! Set it up with this cute Little Red Riding Hood Puppet set, made entirely with craft paper!
Some things unite us millennials across generations, and fairy tales are among them. Especially the most common ones like The Three Little Pigs, Cinderella and the main subject of today’s craft – Red Riding Hood!
The History of Little Red Riding Hood
It is believed that the first version of this story was written by Charles Perrault for the court of French King Louis XIV in the 17th century. This is one of the best known versions of the story, along with the one by Brothers Grimm.
The main difference between these two versions is in the ending. Perrault’s version ends with the wolf gobbling up the Grandmother and Red Riding Hood, but the Grimms’ version goes further. A woodcutter/hunter comes along with an axe, cuts open the wolf and rescues Red Riding Hood and her grandmother – a much more pleasant end!
This story is basically based in European folk culture, but there are similar stories in other cultures like Norse, Russian, North African and Taiwanese.
Well, you know what? Today we’re giving you the opportunity to choose any version of the story you like – and you can with our DIY Little Red Riding Hood Puppet set, featuring the main characters of the tale!

Supplies required:
- Colored cardstock papers
- Pencil
- Craft glue
- A pair of scissors
- Sharpies
How to make the Little Red Riding Hood Puppet Craft:
1. Download and print the Little Red Riding Hood Puppet template. You’ll see that the template is divided into three parts – Red Riding Hood, the Wolf and a tree. No, we don’t have Grandma in this set! Red Riding Hood’s template includes her cape, dress, hood, face, and bow. The wolf’s template has its head, body, face, ears and tail, while the tree has a trunk and two tops.
2. So we’re going to do today’s Little Red Riding Hood Puppet Craft in three parts, starting with the main character – Miss Red Riding Hood herself! Trace the patterns of the Red Riding Hood template on craft paper of the appropriate colors and cut them out. There’s no doubt about what color to choose – it’s red! We’ve used a light yellow for her dress to maintain some contrast.
3. Stick the tiny red circle in the middle of the bow, so it looks like a knot. Take your brown Sharpie and color in some hair for Red Riding Hood.
4. Stick Red Riding Hood’s face in the middle of her red hood. Now she’s earned her name!
6. Complete Red Riding Hood’s head by sticking the bow at the bottom of her face. Stick the cape on top of the dress, aligning the top straight edges.
7. Apply glue along the top edge of the cape and dress, in the middle. Next, stick Red Riding Hood’s head on it.
8. Take out your black Sharpie – we need to give Red some features! Draw eyes, nose and mouth. Use a pink Sharpie to draw cheeks.
9. All that’s left to do is to roll Red Riding Hood’s dress into a cylinder and secure the two ends together with glue. There you go – the first part of our Little Red Riding Hood Puppet Craft is done!
10. It’s time to move on to the second part of our craft – the villain, a.k.a. Mr. Wolf! Trace the wolf patterns on craft paper of the appropriate colors and cut them out. You can choose brown or grey for the wolf’s body, tail and head – we’ve gone with grey. The inner ears are pink while the rest of the wolf is white.
11. Once you have all the pieces ready, start with the head. Stick the inner ears in the ear shapes on the head.
12. Stick the white face on the wolf’s head, aligning the pointy ends together. Stick the tip of the tail on its end. The wolf’s chest, the white circle, is to be attached in the middle of the wolf’s body cutout, in the middle along the top edge.
13. A wolf that is part of a Little Red Riding Hood Puppet Craft has to have ‘great big eyes’ to see and ‘great big teeth’ to bite! Draw these and a nose with a black Sharpie. Now he looks a lot more like a wolf!
14. Roll the wolf’s body pattern into a cylinder shape and glue the ends together.
15. Apply some glue on the top edge of the body, overlapping with the chest. Stick the wolf’s head here and your wolf is ready!
16. The final part of our Little Red Riding Hood Puppet Craft is the tree. The template contains two tops and one trunk, so you can either make one tree or two, with different tops. Trace the tree tops on green paper and the trunk on brown paper. Use a green Sharpie to add details to the tree top. Roll the trunk into a cylinder and glue the ends together. Cut along the slits shown on the tree top patterns and insert the trunk into those slits so it stays in place.
There you go – all the parts of your Little Red Riding Hood Puppet set are ready! You can also cut out a little basket shape from brown craft paper for Red Riding Hood to carry her grandmother’s goodies. Rather than playing out the same old story with these puppets, we’d recommend thinking up something more creative and whacky – it’s sure to delight your audience!
