India’s Independence Day is nearly here, which means you’re going to see the tricolor around a lot! India’s tricolor is made of three equally-sized rectangles, each one a different color – India saffron, white and India green. In the centre of the flag, you’ll find a 24-spoke wheel, named the Ashoka Chakra.

The Indian tricolor didn’t start out this way, though; it went through many changes. Here’s a quick timeline of the evolution of the Indian flag.

22 August 1907 – Madam Bhikaji Cama raises the first tricolor, the Vande Mataram flag, at the International Socialist Conference in Stuttgart, Germany
April 1921 – Mahatma Gandhi stresses the need for an Indian flag and proposes one with three colors and a charkha or spinning wheel at the centre and asks Pingali Venkayya to design one
13 April 1923 – The Swaraj flag with a spinning wheel at the centre, designed by Venkayya, is hoisted during a procession commemorating the Jallianwala Bagh massacre
1931 – The Indian National Congress adopts the Swaraj flag as its official flag
14 July 1947 – The committee set up to select a flag for independent India decides to replace the spinning wheel with the Ashoka Chakra
22 July 1947 – The Constituent Assembly finalizes the current form of the Indian tricolor as the national flag
15 August 1947 – The tricolor becomes the official flag of the Union of India and eventually as the Republic of India
