If you’re looking for ways to celebrate the tricolor this Independence Day, albeit in a unique manner, you’ll enjoy this pretty tricolor quilled flowers craft!

When I was young, the days leading up to Independence Day were always abuzz with excitement. All the kids used to be busy making special crafts, trying to combine saffron, white and green as creatively as possible!

There were, of course, things you would expect to find, like tricolor banners, paper chains or posters featuring national symbols. Then you’d find some truly unique wall hangings or paper sculptures – examples of the creativity of young millennials!

I’ve always carried this tradition with me as I grew older and when I became a parent, my daughter joined me! This year, we decided to try something different, and since she was in a quilling phase, we decided to make a cute tricolor quilled flowers craft!

When Miss P was young, we used to spend Independence Day mornings glued to the TV, watching the tricolor being hoisted at multiple locations across the country. Seeing people from all parts of this large country saluting the same flag was a sight to behold – it gave us goosebumps!

The Indian Ministry of Home Affairs has laid down some rules and guidelines for handling the Indian Tricolor, called the ‘Flag Code of India’. Let’s look at some of them.

Rules for Handling the Indian Tricolor
The national flag  should never touch the ground, water or any surface that could cause damage
When displayed horizontally, the saffron band should be at the top, and when displayed vertically, the saffron band should be on the left
If displayed at night, the tricolor should be appropriately illuminated
The flag should not be used as a holder for any object
Damaged or soiled flags should not be hoisted, but should be disposed of in private

Nothing in the flag code prevents us from making paper quilling crafts, so that’s what we’re going to do this Independence Day! Miss P learnt how to quill from the very talented Ritu Gera and the student has now turned into the teacher! She decided to teach me some quilling basics and that’s how we started exploring some tricolor paper quilling ideas for Independence Day!

Whether it’s International Tiger Day or World Wildlife Day, this tiger corner bookmark is the perfect craft to make! Perfect for learning about India too!

Most of us shop for groceries weekly, and then we chop and prep all our food, going on to cook each meal and finishing it all up with cleanup. It’s quite a lot of effort.

Now imagine getting your food with very little physical effort, and then having enough to last a whole week. Sounds ridiculous, but it’s certainly possible if you’re a tiger!

Tigers kill their prey with a bite to their neck or head, and one large deer can last a tiger an entire week. Here are some more interesting facts about this amazing cat.

Fun Facts about Tigers
Tigers are the largest wildcats in the world, with adult tigers weighing up to 363kg
A tiger’s roar can be heard as far as three kilometres away
Every tiger’s stripe pattern is unique; no two tigers have the same stripes
Over half the world’s tigers are in India; it’s the country’s national animal
Tigers are listed as ‘endangered’ by the International Union for Conservation of Nature

With International Tiger Day falling on 29th July and India’s Independence Day coming up on 15th August, this seems like the perfect time for a tiger corner bookmark papercraft!

The central cone of a daffodil is called the Corona – hence the wordplay! It is one of the most identifiable parts of the flower, and part of what gives the bloom its iconic look.

And iconic it is – the daffodil is the national flower of Wales. It belongs to the family of the Narcissus and is said to represent hope and renewal. Well, this couldn’t be farther from the truth! Donkeys have been quite respected for centuries – here are a few instances.

Donkeys in Religions and Legends
Ancient Egyptians considered the donkey a symbol of the Egyptian sun god Ra
In Greek myth, the wine god Dionysus’ companion Silenus used to ride a donkey

Becoming an astronaut sounds amazing, doesn’t it? Ask any child and they would say that it would be super cool to wear a nice, big spacesuit and walk on the moon. That’s probably why kids love the space sections at museums, and often look at astronauts as heroes!

Most Iconic Astronauts in History

Aleksei Leonov – Russian astronaut, the first man to leave the spacecraft and take a spacewalk

This paper plate astronaut helmet craft is one of the easiest crafts for little space enthusiasts to make! All you need is a paper plate and craft paper!

One of the easiest ways to identify an astronaut is of course, their spacesuit. It’s large, bulky and has a massive helmet – it’s pretty hard to miss!

An astronaut’s spacesuit doesn’t just protect them from external things like flying meteoroids or UV rays, it does a lot more. In fact, NASA says that a spacesuit is can be considered a single person spaceship!

One of the main protective elements of a spacesuit is the helmet, which is larger than regular helmets worn during bike riding or cycling. Here are some of the special parts of an astronaut helmet.

Main Parts of an Astronaut Helmet
The main shell of the helmet is made from a strong material that’s also lightweight, like polycarbonate or fiberglass
The eyes are covered by a visor, a transparent shield that can be lifted and lowered
Most helmets have levers on the side to help in controlling the visor’s movment
The helmet’s base is a neck ring that attaches the helmet to the rest of the spacesuit
The helmet is also equipped with a communication system that helps the astronaut talk to the rest of the crew

Now that we know the importance of an astronaut helmet, let’s try and make a paper plate astronaut helmet craft. It’s a really easy craft that can be made with things lying around the home!
