Mother’s Day Koala Bookmark

We humans carry our babies inside our bodies for nine months, and then they’re out in the big, wide world. But we still keep them close – with lots of hugs and cuddles!
Well, there’s an animal that keeps its baby inside its body for about a month, then inside a pouch for about six months, and then on its back for another six months. That sounds like quite a fun ride, and it is – for the baby koala!
Baby koalas are called joeys, like kangaroos, and when they’re born, they’re only 2 cm long, blind and deaf, but with an amazing sense of smell. It takes them half a year inside their mother’s pouch and another half a year on her back before they’re ready for the wild. We think this is adorable, which is why we decided to capture this in our cute DIY Mother’s Day koala bookmark!
Cute and Easy DIY Mother’s Day Koala Bookmark
Supplies required:
- Colored cardstock papers
- Pencil
- A pair of scissors
- Craft glue
- Sharpies
How to make the DIY Mother’s Day Koala Bookmark:
1. Download and print the Mother’s Day koala bookmark template. The template contains parts of the Mama and baby koalas, including head, body and ears.
2. Trace the parts of the template on craft papers of the appropriate colors and cut them out. You can use brown or grey for the koalas – but keep the same color for baby and Mama!
3. We’re assembling both koalas at once, and we’re starting with the head. Stick the pink ears inside the appropriate places on the koalas’ heads.
4. Use a black Sharpie or marker to draw small triangular noses in the middle of the koalas’ faces. Speaking of noses, did you know that koalas smell like eucalyptus or cough drops?
5. Fill in the nose outlines with the black Sharpie or marker. Add eyes and a mouth above and below the nose, respectively. Take out the pink marker and draw cheeks on both koalas.
6. Time to move on to the bodies, and we’ll start with the Mama koala. Stick the pink belly on the back body part of the koala.
7. Now take the front body part and flip it over. Apply glue to this side, keeping the hand and leg free from glue.
8. Attach the front body cutout on top of the back one, aligning the outer edges of both parts together.
9. Let’s put Mama Koala together! Attach the head on top of the body and it’s done. Now that the first part of the Mother’s Day koala bookmark is done, it’s time to move on to the baby. Attach the baby’s head on its body and that’s done.
10. We’re almost done with our Mother’s Day koala bookmark! All that’s left to do is to stick the baby on the back of the mother and you’re done!
11. To use the Mother’s Day koala bookmark, simply slide a page between the body layers of the Mama koala.
How easy was that? A fun way to present the Mother’s Day koala bookmark is to stick it on a card with a light adhesive, and to write an adorable message inside. Mom can then read the card and later pull out the bookmark, which will always remind her of her little munchkins when she opens her book!
