There can’t be a child anywhere in the world who hasn’t tried a Popsicle at least once in their life. But how did this simple food item become so popular across the globe?

The Story of the Popsicle

An early version of the popsicle was in 1872, when a duo named Ross and Robins created a fruit-based frozen dessert on a stick, called the Hokey-Pokey.

But the real popsicle as we know today was created by Francis William “Frank” Epperson. When he was 11, Frank accidentally left a glass containing a mixture of powdered lemon soda and water on his porch, with a stirring stick in it. It was a very cold night, and when Frank woke up the next morning and pulled out the stick from the glass, he found that he had made the world’s first ice pop!

In 1922, at the age of 28, he introduced his new product at a fireman‘s ball. The ice pops were a hit, and he ended up patenting the frozen ice pop in 1923, calling it the ‘Epsicle‘. The first official release of the Epsicle featured seven fruit flavors, and today there are many more!

That’s a fascinating story, and I bet you’re even a little in awe of the humble popsicle! So let’s go ahead and celebrate the frozen ice pop with an Origami popsicle craft!

How to make the Origami Popsicle Craft:

1. Download and print the Origami Popsicle Craft Template. Why do we need a template for an Origami craft, you ask? Well, the main popsicle is still made purely using Origami, but we’re using a template for the stick, topping and sprinkles. Origami purists, hope that’s okay!

2. Trace the parts of the template on craft paper of the appropriate colors and cut them out. This is the best part – since Popsicles come in all flavors, you can make a Popsicle craft in any color you like! Choose a different color for the main popsicle and the topping, so they are distinct from each other. Let the sprinkles be colorful, and let the stick be a neutral color like light brown. If you want, you can simply cut any square paper of side 10 cm.

3. Let’s start folding our Origami popsicle craft! Take the square paper and fold it in half diagonally along both sides. Unfold.

4. Turn the paper to the other side and make vertical and horizontal half folds and unfold.

5. Make mountain folds along the diagonal crease and valley folds along the vertical and horizontal creases.

6. Flatten the pattern so you get two triangles, one on top of the other.

7. Take the right edge of the upper triangle and fold it inward to meet the central line of the triangle.

8. Take the right corner of the newly created flap in the last step and fold it inward to meet the same central line.

9. Take the right edge of the newly created flap in the last step and fold it inward to meet the same central line.

10. Repeat steps 7-9 on the left side. You now have a central stick part with two triangles on either side.

11. Take the corner on the right and fold it inward towards the stick.

12. Fold the edge of the newly created flap from the previous step inward towards the stick.

13. Repeat steps 11-12 on the left side. Your Origami popsicle craft now looks like a rocket, with a pointy end on top.

14. Fold the pointy end down by a centimetre.

15. Turn the origami pattern over to the front side so that all the folds are not visible anymore. It’s time to assemble the remaining parts of the Origami popsicle craft.

16. Attach the stick to the bottom of the Origami pattern. Stick the topping on the top of the Origami pattern and then stick the sprinkles all over the topping.

There you go – your Origami popsicle craft is complete!
