Here are some cute red panda crafts for kids – to help them learn about the fun animal and also celebrate International Red Panda Day on 16th Sep!

When you hear the word ‘panda‘, what is the image that comes to mind?

For most people, it will be a large, fluffy, cuddly, black-and-white creature that keeps tumbling over itself. However, that cute guy isn’t the original panda – it is the red panda that has that honor!

Yes, the red panda was the only panda for about 5o years, after which the giant panda was discovered, so now we know who was first!

Who discovered the red panda?

The red panda was discovered by Georges-Frédéric Cuvier, a French zoologist. Frédéric Cuvier was a pretty big deal in his times – he has been mentioned in Darwin’s book ‘On the Origin of Species’ as well as in Moby Dick.

The animal he discovered was the Himalayan red panda, which lives in Nepal and north-eastern India. This panda’s scientific name is Ailurus (fulgens) fulgens – Ailurus is from the Greek word ailouros, which means cat, and fulgens means ‘fire-colored’. Sounds like an accurate description of the red panda!

It also sounds like the red panda is a gorgeous creature, and Frédéric Cuvier even said that it was the most beautiful one he had ever seen! So the red panda certainly deserves to be celebrated, especially since International Red Panda Day is coming up on 16th September 2023! If you’re ready, so are we – with some cute red panda crafts!
