Supplies required:
- Colored craft papers
- Cardstock
- Pencil
- Craft glue
- A pair of scissors
- X-acto knife
How to make the Woven Paper Rocket Craft:
1. Download the Woven Paper Rocket Craft Template. The template has a rocket base with slit lines, a nose cone, fins and strips in different sizes. The shorter strips are for the flame, while the longer ones are for weaving.

2. Trace the parts of the template on craft paper of the appropriate colors and cut them out. Choose a thick cardstock for the rocket base and regular-weight craft paper for the remaining patterns. Once you’ve cut out the patterns, use an X-acto knife to cut slits as marked on the rocket base.

3. Let’s start the weaving portion of our woven paper rocket craft! Take the rocket base and a colored weaving strip. Insert it in the slit closest to the straight edge of the rocket cutout.

4. Weave that strip over and under all the way till you reach the last slit. Bring the strip out of the last slit. Apply glue at both ends of the strip to secure it in place.

5. Now take the second strip and as you did with the first strip, insert it in the slit closest to the straight edge of the rocket cutout. But this time, weave alternating with the first strip; where the first strip went over, the second strip goes over, and vice versa. Continue till you reach the opposite end and secure the strip with glue.

6. Take the third strip and weave it in the same way as the first strip, so that it alternates with the second strip. Once that is secured in place, move on to the fourth strip, and weave it in the same way as the second strip. You should end up with an alternating basket weave pattern as shown below.

7. Once you’re done with the weaving of your woven paper rocket craft, trim the extra length of the strips so they no longer pop out of the rocket base cutout.

8. Apply glue on the back of the rocket base and stick it in the middle of the fin cutout, so that fin is towards the bottom of the rocket, and all you can see are triangles on either side of the rocket base.

9. Attach the nose cone pattern to the top of the rocket base.

10. All our woven paper rocket craft needs now are some flames! Gather the small strips and apply glue to one end of each strip.

11. Attach the glued edges of the strips to the straight edge of the rocket base. If you have two colors like we have here, alternate the colors. Let the glue dry completely.

That’s it – your woven paper rocket craft is ready!

The fun part about this woven paper rocket craft is that you can make it in any color combination you like – you don’t have to stick to ‘traditional’ rocket colors! If you like, you can create a color scheme based on a country’s flag and trace the template on the matching craft paper. That way, you’d learn about flags and rockets all in one go!
