Submarines are amazing machines aren’t they? Let’s learn more about them with this fun and easy submarine bookmark papercraft for kids!

One of the biggest news stories of 2023 was the Titanic – no, not the ship, but the submersible. It was called the Titan and was created to explore the wreckage of the Titanic.

While the expedition ended in disaster, it raised curiosity about vessels that traveled underwater. I mean, it is rather amazing that a man-made machine can go down to the depths of the ocean and stay there for months. Well, that’s the magic of a submarine!

Fun Facts about Submarines

  • Submarines have multiple purposes, the main ones being marine research, salvage missions and military uses
  • The first known military submarine was in 1775, called the ‘Turtle’ and it could hold one person
  • Many submarines are quite large, holding over 100 people
  • While we may think of submarines as ‘underwater ships’, they are called ‘boats’, as per Naval tradition
  • The United States and Russia are the two countries with the most submarines in the world

The more you think about it, the more incredible it seems, making an underwater watercraft! They’re quite expensive to build too, with an average submarine costing anywhere from $80 million to $2 billion! However, today’s submarine is a pretty easy and economical one to make, and all you need is craft paper and craft sticks!
