20 Exciting Eid ul Adha Crafts and Activities for Kids
Learn all about Hajj and the Feast of the Sacrifice with these exciting Eid ul Adha Crafts and Activities for Kids! There’s something for every age!
You’ve probably heard that Eid is the most important festival for Muslims around the world, but did you know that there are two Eids? Yes, there are two occasions to feast and celebrate!
The first Eid in the Islamic calendar is the feast at the end of the month of fasting, known as Ramadan. This Eid is also known as Eid ul Fitr. The second Eid is the Feast of the Sacrifice, and is known as Eid ul Adha or Bakrid. There’s quite an interesting story behind it!
Why do we celebrate Eid ul-Adha?
The story behind Eid ul Adha is based on the Prophet Ibrahim (also known as Abraham). He longed for a child, and prayed for one for years. Finally, after years of prayer, God granted him his wish and he was blessed with a son, Ismail. Ibrahim and his wife were overjoyed!
Years later, when Ismail was a teenager, Ibrahim began to get recurrent dreams in which God asked him to sacrifice that which was most dear to him, i.e., his son Ismail. This was, of course, unthinkable to Ibrahim, who tried to ignore these dreams.
But finally, he realized that he could stall God’s order no more, and he talked to Ismail about it. The son agreed that the father should go ahead and prove his faith, even if it meant giving up his life. People who heard about it were shocked, and they thought that Ibrahim was mad.
With tears in his eyes, Ibrahim raised the knife to sacrifice his son, but at that instant, God commanded him to stop and sacrifice an animal instead. He had proved his faith and there was no need for Ismail to die!!
Needless to say, Ibrahim was relieved and this is how the festival of sacrifice came to be. Later, Ibrahim and his son built the Kaaba at Mecca in Saudi Arabia, which is where Muslims across the world go on pilgrimage.
What is the significance of this story?
- If you believe in something, do so utterly and completely, and be ready to sacrifice everything to reach your goal
- Often, sacrificing temporary pleasures can reap permanent benefits
- If something is keeping you from your goals, like a bad habit or addiction, sacrificing it is better for you, however hard it may seem
But here’s one thing you don’t have to sacrifice this Eid ul Adha – making crafts! We’ve rounded up some of the best Eid ul Adha crafts and activities for kids to try this festive season and celebrate its spirit!
