Easy Origami Koi Fish Craft for Kids

Here’s a fun Origami Koi Fish Craft that’s not too hard – it’s easy enough for older kids and an adequate challenge for Origami beginners!

What is one sign of a luxurious home for you? For many, it may be chandeliers or marble, but I know that many people would absolutely love it if they had a koi pond at home!

Most of us have heard of koi fish, which is actually a kind of Amur carp – the Japanese name is Nishikigoi, which translates into ‘swimming jewel’ These are not just pretty – they’re also a symbol for good fortune and prosperity!

Koi is a common name, but there are more than 100 varieties of the fish. The most common colors are red, white and black, along with orange, yellow, blue and cream.

Since we’ve learnt a little about Koi fish, why not make our own version of it? Here is an easy Origami Koi fish craft that kids and even adults can try!

Easy Origami Koi Fish Craft for Kids

Here's a fun Origami Koi Fish Craft that's not too hard - it's easy enough for older kids and an adequate challenge for Origami beginners!

Supplies required:

  • Origami paper in any color of your choice
  • Googly eyes or white craft paper

How to make the Origami Koi Fish Craft:

1. Make sure your Origami paper is in the shape of a rectangle, with edges approximately in a 2:3 ratio.

2. Fold the rectangle along the short side, so you get a fold parallel to the long sides. Unfold the paper.

3. Fold both the long edges towards the center fold.

4. Fold the bottom two corners inward, so they meet along the center fold. 

5. Unfold all the folds made in the previous steps. You’ll now have three lines parallel to the long edge, and two triangles at the bottom. 

6. Fold the two long edges towards the middle, till the tops of the triangles at the bottom. 

7. Fold the bottom edge upwards, creating a fold line that joins the corners of the triangles. You now have a boat shape at the bottom.

8. Turn the entire Origami Koi fish craft upside down so the folds are now at the underside. You can now see a long rectangle with two small triangles jutting out on either side at the bottom. 

9. Fold the two triangles inwards, toward the center fold.

10. Fold the ends of the triangles once again outwards. 

11. Turn the Origami Koi fish craft upside down again. Now you see a tall rectangle, a small rectangle and two small triangles. 

12. Fold the tall rectangle from top to bottom. Open the fold so you get a line in the middle. 

13. From the two ends of this line, fold the bottom halves inward and then open them again. 

14. Fold the long rectangle along the center fold so that the flaps fall on either side. 

15. Turn the Origami Koi fish craft on its side.

16. Now turn the whole thing upside down. You’ll get the triangles pointing downward. 

17. Open up the upper triangle – the head of the Origami Koi fish craft. 

18. Bring up the rest of the Origami Koi fish craft – the tail. 

19. Open up the fold of the tail. 

20. Take the corners of the two inner folds and fold them outward. 

21. Bring up the center fold of the tail.

22. Push up the folds of the head of the Origami Koi fish craft, so it is now curving upward.

23. Pinch in the folds towards the end of the tail, so you get a flared-out tail.

24. Stick on some eyes and your Origami Koi fish craft is complete!

Aren’t these little Koi fish pretty? It may not be the ideal craft for an absolute Origami beginner, but once you’ve made a few projects, this is the perfect one to give you a bit of a challenge!
