Here’s a fun and easy toucan bookmark craft for kids of all ages to try! All you need are basic supplies like craft papers, scissors, glue & Sharpies!

We’ve heard a lot about how sugary cereals are bad for your health, but can their boxes be educational? Well, they certainly were for me – it was my Fruit Loops box that taught me what a toucan looked like!

Yes, Kellogg’s Fruit Loops mascot, Toucan Sam, has been around for over 50 years, and is quite a popular character. The toucan is a bird native to South America, from Mexico to Argentina. While it’s not as commonly represented as eagles or parrots, Fruit Loops made sure we knew about it!

Besides cereal boxes, toucans are also seen on TV – Dora the Explorer relied on Senor Tucan for advice, while the Pokemon universe featured a toucan named Toucannon.

Well today, we’re going to turn off the screens and pick up a book – but first we’ll make ourselves a cute little toucan bookmark craft, so we have a nice little reading buddy!

Craft papers
Pencil
Craft glue

How to make the Toucan Bookmark Craft:

1. Download and print the toucan bookmark craft template. The template consists of the parts of the toucan bookmark, including beak, eye, body, wing, feet and tail.

2. Trace the parts of the template on craft papers of the appropriate colors and cut them out. The toucan here is a white-throated toucan, which means you need white and black for the body, tail and wing, along with yellow and orange for the beak.

3. Let’s start by getting the base of our toucan bookmark craft ready. The base or larger body part is black and the smaller one is white. Stick the white on the black, aligning the left sides of both.

4. One of the most identifiable features of the toucan is its bright orange beak. To make this, stick the lower beak under the upper beak, applying glue on the back.

5. Did you know that the toucan’s beak is elongated so that it can reach hidden parts of trees to find its food? Make it easy for our toucan too by sticking the beak on the head part of the body.

6. Attach the feet along the bottom of the toucan’s body.

7. Attach the tail to the bottom of the toucan, applying glue to the back so it doesn’t hide the feet.

8. Our toucan bookmark craft is missing a wing, so let’s stick one on! In reality, toucan’s wings help them glide, rather than fly far. Here, apply glue only to the upper end of the wing, making sure the lower edge is free from glue.

9. Use a sharpie to draw the toucan’s eye, placing it behind the beak. That’s it – your toucan bookmark craft is ready!

To use the bookmark, simply insert the top edge of the page between the toucan’s wing and body – that’s why we asked to keep the wing’s bottom half free!
