If someone asked you to name a wise animal or bird, the first image to come to your mind would most probably be that of an owl

So why exactly are owls considered so wise? It’s not like they’re professors or judges or anything! Maybe it has something to do with the way they look – their large eyes and flat faces, which make it look like they’re thinking about something serious all the time!

But that’s not all; owls have also been featured in mythology, which has added to their reputation.

The Representation of Owls in Mythology

In Greek mythology, the goddess Athene is a representation of wisdom and knowledge, and she is often shown with an owl next to her. Similarly, Minerva is the Roman goddess of wisdom, and she is accompanied by an owl called the ‘Owl of Minerva’.

The earlier Native Americans also considered the owl as a creature of foresight, and they were associated with many prophecies. In Hinduism, the owl is the preferred mount of Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity.

Science has also shown that owls have some outstanding abilities – excellent eyesight, superb hearing and the perception to navigate spaces even in utter darkness. Maybe the owl does deserve its ‘wise’ label – making it the perfect choice for a reading companion. So here’s a fun and easy owl bookmark craft for kids to make!

3. Let’s start putting together the owl bookmark craft! Stick the little triangle owl face on the top of the owl’s head. This triangle appears to separate the facial discs on the owl’s face. A facial disc is a concave group of feathers that surrounds the eyes.

4. Attach the wing on the left side of the owl’s body, making sure to apply glue only to the top of the wing, so that the bottom is free and unattached. Owl’s wings are generally quite large for their body size, and help them fly without making any noise.

5. Stick the owl’s tail on the bottom of the body, applying glue on the behind. Owls’ tails are usually quite short, and work to keep the bird stable during flight.
