Learn all about Hajj and the Feast of the Sacrifice with these exciting Eid ul Adha Crafts and Activities for Kids! There’s something for every age!

You’ve probably heard that Eid is the most important festival for Muslims around the world, but did you know that there are two Eids? Yes, there are two occasions to feast and celebrate!

The first Eid in the Islamic calendar is the feast at the end of the month of fasting, known as Ramadan. This Eid is also known as Eid ul Fitr. The second Eid is the Feast of the Sacrifice, and is known as Eid ul Adha or Bakrid. There’s quite an interesting story behind it!

Why do we celebrate Eid ul-Adha?

The story behind Eid ul Adha is based on the Prophet Ibrahim (also known as Abraham). He longed for a child, and prayed for one for years. Finally, after years of prayer, God granted him his wish and he was blessed with a son, Ismail. Ibrahim and his wife were overjoyed!

Years later, when Ismail was a teenager, Ibrahim began to get recurrent dreams in which God asked him to sacrifice that which was most dear to him, i.e., his son Ismail. This was, of course, unthinkable to Ibrahim, who tried to ignore these dreams.

But finally, he realized that he could stall God’s order no more, and he talked to Ismail about it. The son agreed that the father should go ahead and prove his faith, even if it meant giving up his life. People who heard about it were shocked, and they thought that Ibrahim was mad.

With tears in his eyes, Ibrahim raised the knife to sacrifice his son, but at that instant, God commanded him to stop and sacrifice an animal instead. He had proved his faith and there was no need for Ismail to die!!

Needless to say, Ibrahim was relieved and this is how the festival of sacrifice came to be. Later, Ibrahim and his son built the Kaaba at Mecca in Saudi Arabia, which is where Muslims across the world go on pilgrimage.

What is the significance of this story?
This story has actually quite a few hidden lessons, which form the essence of this festival. Here are some of them:
If you believe in something, do so utterly and completely, and be ready to sacrifice everything to reach your goal
Often, sacrificing temporary pleasures can reap permanent benefits
If something is keeping you from your goals, like a bad habit or addiction, sacrificing it is better for you, however hard it may seem
But here’s one thing you don’t have to sacrifice this Eid ul Adha – making crafts! We’ve rounded up some of the best Eid ul Adha crafts and activities for kids to try this festive season and celebrate its spirit!

If you’re looking for a fine motor exercise for your child that also boosts focus and concentration, this woven paper turtle craft is the perfect choice!

Imagine a part of your body is so strong that it lasts long after the rest of you is gone. Imagine this part of your body is considered sacred, and even as a calendar. How awesome would that be?

Well, these things may be impossible for us, but not for a turtle, whose shell is unlike anything else in the world!

Why are turtle shells so special?

You know that turtle shells are hard, but did you know that they’re made of bony plates called scutes? Many turtle species have 13 scutes on the central part of their shell, which is where the associated mysticism comes from.

Many indigenous tribes believe the 13 scutes correspond to the 13 lunar cycles in a year, assuming that each cycle lasts 28 days. This shows that the turtle has a strong connection with Mother Nature’s rhythms, which is why many cultures treat it as a living calendar.

That’s not all, a turtle’s shell is probably the only part that’ll survive the fossilization process. I think we can safely say that it’s the shell that makes the turtle such a celebrated creature in many cultures!

Since 23rd May is World Turtle Day, we think it’s the perfect time for a turtle craft, and we’ve got one that features a special woven paper shell!

We’re all set to celebrate International Firefighters’ Day on 4th May with some cool firefighter crafts for kids! Goes well with a lesson on fire safety!

What is it with kids and fire trucks? If you’re the parent of a child between the ages of 3 and 8, you’re sure to have noticed this inexplicable love for these massive red trucks. Maybe it’s the colour and the size, or the alarm sounds.

Or maybe it’s because they love superheroes!

Yes, firefighters are the real-life superheroes of our community, and that’s why we even have a special day to celebrate them – International Firefighters’ Day!

What is International Firefighters’ Day?

International Firefighters’ Day is observed every year on 4th May. The story behind it is quite tragic, though.

On December 2 1998, the Geelong West Fire Brigade in Australia got a call to assist in fighting a wildfire. A truck set out from the fire station and was heading to refill the water tank. Unfortunately, the wind direction changed suddenly, ending up in the flames, completely engulfing the fire truck and killing five firefighters.

It was then decided to have a day in honour of the fallen heroes, which we now observe as International Firefighters’ Day. It’s a day when people across the world acknowledge the sacrifices made by firefighters everywhere, and also remember the contributions of those who have passed away.

Now that we know how important this day is, let’s join in by learning more about firefighters – and making some cool firefighter crafts for kids!

Think about the last time you were worried – for me, it was this morning! Your worry was most probably related to anxiety about a future event, or regret about something from the past.

Sounds amazing, right? This is Gautam Buddha’s message, and it shows why we need his teachings today, more than ever!

Who was Buddha?

Buddha was born Siddhartha Gautama, in a royal family in today’s Nepal. Although he was born into a life of luxury, he gave it all up to become an ascetic, spreading the message of peace, compassion and service to humanity.

Today, millions of people around the world follow the teachings of Buddha, and they’re called Buddhists. Countries like Myanmar, Bhutan, Sri Lanka and Cambodia have even adopted Buddhism as their state religion.

It is believed that the Buddha was born on the Day of Vesak in the year 623 B.C. This is also the day that the Buddha attained enlightenment, as well as the day he passed away. Due to this significance, Vesak is an important festival for Buddhists around the world.

Vesak falls on the day of the full moon in the month of Vesakha, and in 2026, Vesak is on the 1st of May. Vesak is also known as Wesak, Buddha Day, Buddha Purnima or Buddha Jayanti.

How is Vesak celebrated?

Vesak is usually celebrated with great enthusiasm, and it is also a day for Buddhists to remember the Buddha’s teachings. Everyone cleans their home before the festival and decorates it with flowers and lanterns.

The day of the festival begins with Buddhists visiting temples and pouring water over Buddha statues. Offerings are made to Buddhist monks, usually food and flowers. People conduct prayer meetings and serve vegetarian food at feasts. Some regions also have candle-lit processions and parades.

Now that we have a basic idea of the festival, let’s move into making some fun Vesak crafts for kids! These will help get us into the spirit of the occasion, while also learning more about it!

“Art is never finished, only abandoned” – Leonardo da Vinci

This quote probably sounds a little strange to us, but when it’s from the master of art himself, we have to accept it!

But it isn’t that strange for Da Vinci, who was known to take ages over a single painting or work of art, leaving onlookers wondering if it was ever going to get finished. His most famous work of art is probably the Mona Lisa, which has become the stuff of legends. But there’s so much more to the man!

Interesting Facts about Leonardo da Vinci
Leonardo da Vinci was known as the Renaissance man, since he was many things at once – painter, sculptor,  engineer, architect, inventor, scientist, astronomer, anatomist, botanist, geologist, musician and writer
Being so good at so many things often meant that he left several projects unfinished
Leonardo was the illegitimate child of a wealthy notary in Florence, which was actually good for him, since he didn’t have to follow his father’s footsteps and could do whatever his heart desired
He started learning art at the age of 14, becoming an apprentice to the famous Florentine sculptor and painter, Andrea del Verrocchio
It is believed that da Vinci was a vegetarian, owing to his love for animals

Of course, there’s a lot more to learn about the amazing artist, and we’ll do it as we try out some cool and creative Leonardo da Vinci projects for kids!
